Your Megadeth Story

Saw them last year at the Download festival. I've never got massively into them - I like the odd few tracks, but on the whole, I always preffered early Metallica and Slayer. Anyway, I remembered while they were playing that the show was meant to be their last UK performance EVAR - so I proceed to get out my mobile phone and call up my mate Bonez, who is absolutely Megadeth-obsessed, and couldn't make it. Right as Hangar 18 kicks off, he answers, and I hold the phone up to the air for him. About twenty seconds later, I put the phone back to my ear.

"Bastard."

They played Hangar 18 right? In fact, didn't Hangar 18 win a grammy? Was that the same year Jethro Tull won a grammy for best metal album? :tickled:
im pretty certain metallicas black album and/or "enter sandman" took the award(s).

First bought RIP in the early 90's (probably '92) after getting Metallica's early albums. I always did like the last track. Proceeded to get some early albums and CtE, Youthanasia.

I especially liked Hidden Treasures, because of Angry Again and the awesome Diadems (Diadems>Rust in Peace). I always liked Youthanasia, but could never appreciate the older stuff. Don't know why. I really didn't like CtE except for the title track.

The rest is history I guess. Megadeth was a necesary stepping stone (like Metallica) on the road to better metal. For that, they'll always have my respect.

.....and now my interest in this band has piqued again. I honestly dont remember much of pre-Rust in Peace, and Im not interested in anything post-Youthanasia.

I think I need this band again. Dunno why, but listening to lots of Sepultura lately got me interested in hearing Megadeath again. blame it on the hot weather

Screw those remasters, though.

Not sure how the first 4 Megadeth albums can be a "stepping stone" to anything better within the realm of this style of speed/thrash metal. I think I've exhausted all the options in the other thread. Some good stuff that might fall into the same category: Annihilator (first 2), Artillery, Liege Lord, and maybe Heathen (but it's more like Anthrax), but I'm always open to more suggestions.

In reality, the first 4 Megadeth albums are about as good as it gets when you're in the mood for this kinda speedy/technical/melodic metal. While Rust in Peace is the obvious crowning glory, it's also a little clean in comparison to the earlier 3. Listen to Killing is my Business and you can practically smell the weed, heroin, and rusty needles. "Looking down the Cross", "Skull beneath the Skin", "Loved to Deth", Rattlehead"....

Megadeth's debut >>>> Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax debuts

Heathen more like Anthrax? :zombie: Anthrax (besides Fistful Of Metal) is whiffleball, goofy, funtime shit. I can't stand them. Heathen is lightyears ahead of Anthrax is every category except "who came first."

But yeah, aside from Fistful Of Metal, I don't care for Anthrax. :p

Yeah, I guess the vocal style in Heathen reminds me of Anthrax. It's that shouty kind, as opposed to melodic vocal lines a la Mustaine, Joe Comeau, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I like Heathen. I just wouldn't say they're a clear cut candidate for this style simply because of the vocals.

Note to vocalists: For better or for worse, if you can't sing harmonies to your own vocal lines, then you're not actually singing.

Have you ever heard anything Anthrax released after State of euphoria?

I still own Persistence Of Time, and I've heard the first two Bush-era albums many times, all of which suck, as far as I'm concerned.

So after all the oh my gosh wot Anthrax challenging responses, I went back and listened to Heathen today (Victims of Deception).

Sorry folks, but the first two tracks at least sound a helluva lot like Anthrax to me. The intros are all a bit Testament-like for sure, but the verse riffs and delivery SCREAM "Anthrax Part 2"!!

On the train this morning, I had the urge to shout along:

DISEASE DISEASE SPREADING THE DISEASE
WITH SOME HELP FROM CAPTAIN TRIPPS HE'LL BRING THE WORLD DOWN TO HIS KNEES

"Hypnotized" and "Opiate the Masses" sound like total Scott Ian worship to me. Just sayin'.

Top 5 songs is a tough one. My list would probably contain "Take no Prisoners".

Does anyone know anyone who can play "Poison was the Cure"? As far as I know, Megadeth have never played this live. Only Mustaine recorded the rhythm tracks and no other guitarist has been able to play it alongside him. Friedman just did the oh-so-glorious guitar solo.

even i remember Diadems from the Demon Knight soundtrack. great Megadeth song. also Angry Again.

the first two songs off Youthanasia are good. im just not very familiar with early megadeth or post-youthanasia

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think Dave singing A Tout Le Monde sounded much more convincing when he was still addicted to heroin.

That was weak.

If I had to:

Wake Up Dead
Good Mourning / Black Friday
My Last Words
Holy Wars... The Punishment Due
Hangar 18

I can play the bassline, which is essentially the roots of the rhythm guitar part. I fucking love that Hammer of the Goats tone on the accents for that one. Obviously I'd have no chance whatsoever with the guitar solos. :loco:

That whole album should be mandatory for metal musicians to learn. If anything it improves right hand technique more than a summer alone during puberty.
