I haven't heard Deliverance (still no vinyl release!), but I think his voice has evolved greatly from Orchid & Morningrise to My Arms Your Hears & Blackwater Park! I think he sounds kind of out of tune and weakly on their first two LP's. The a capella part of "Black rose immortal" is an example of this I think. But anyway, you're welcome to prefer his older vocal! :) I think we also discussed this a while back at the Opeth forum.

Dan Swano

I'll buy any album (and there are plenty) that he is singing on. I don't know what it is, but I am a complete sucker for Dan's singing, particularly the way he sings on Nighingale albums. Other than one friend of mine though, pretty much everyone I know cringes when I put that on. Go figure...

Oh, the thread is for five. Let's see...

Johnny Hedlund
Sean Killian
Hansi Kursch
King Diamond

That's off the top of my head.

This question is difficult to me, because of the difference between singing and growling/screaming. They both take inordinate amounts of talent, but they can hardly be compared. I'll just list my 5 faves for each style:

Singers:
Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
Michael Kiske (old-Helloween)
Edu Falaschi (Angra)
Matthew Barlow (Iced Earth)
Tobias Sammett (Edguy, Avantasia)

Growlers:
Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy)
Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity)
Tomas Lindgren (ex-At The Gates, ex-The Crown, The Great Deceiver)
Mikael Akerfeld (Opeth, Bloodbath)
Satyr Wongraven (Satyricon, Wongraven, Storm)

I think you are right Board but on Orchid and Morningrise he sounds like "deeper" or "emotional" than now
but his growls are getting much better, they sound less aggressive and more tuned with the music

Dan Swano (Nightingale)
Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses)
Vincent Cavanagh (Anathema)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Lars Eric Si (Winds)

1. John Arch (former Fates Warning singer, coming out with a new album called "A Twist of Fate")
2. Henning Basse (Metallium)
3. John Oliva (Savatage)
4. Mikael Akerfeldt (I think this one has been made clear by now)
5. Ray Alder (Fates Warning / Engine)

I was talking about his clean vocals, I don't if you were doing the same? Anyway, I don't really know which growls I prefer, as it's hard to say as I haven't heard the newer stuff with the old vocal and vice versa.
Jon (Dissection)
Are you sure you're not thinking of Jon from the Danish popstars?
Other people I forgot:
Chris Cornell - I think you clearly hear the evolution from their first albums (& also "Badmotorfinger") to "Superunkown". A track like "4th of July" really showcases his vocal! I don't know what it is about his vocal that I like, maybe it's the kind of beatiful rawness in it!?
Anneke from The Gathering. Before I got my hands on "Mandylion" she got into my top 5 of female singers. I only had a tape of Headbangers Ball with the "Leaves" video taped on a not too good video with not too good sound. When I got the record I must admit that I was a little dissapointed with her voice as it didn't sound as good as on the videotape IMO.
One of the so-called "clean" singers that I basically think sings crappy is Tom Araya! Back in the old days he at least tried to sing, although it didn't sound too good. Nowadays he just yells and screams and I really can't stand it! Maybe it's to cover up their recent crappy records, so people will just notice the energy instead of the crappy riffs!

I see a lot of us like a lot of the same people! My honorable mentions got to:
Jamey Shanahan (Hatebreed)
Zakk Wylde
Burton C. Bell
Dave Mustaine

And a big "FUCK YOU" to Bruce Dickinson!!!
I'm sure there's a thousand people who disagree with that, but too bad.

How about a big FUCK YOU to Hatebreed? I think that's a little more appropriate than saying fuck you to a metal legend...

Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle)
Phil Anselmo (Pantera)
Tom Araya (Slayer)
James Hetfield (Metallica)
Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth, Bloodbath)
Fenriz (Darkthrone)
