Best way IME is just add "ss" after www. before the youtube url.
You will then get options for format etc.
Example:
Video URL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnTL1L8a6YI
Video URL with "ss" added
https://www.ssyoutube.com/watch?v=SnTL1L8a6YI
You will then get options for format etc.

I've had good luck with http://www.savetube.com/. It looks a little sketchy (ads everywhere) but lets you select video or audio and quality settings.

I think AppGeeker converter www.appgeeker.com and has a lot of options to convert YouTube videos to AVI format and a few other conversions.

If you're using firefox, there is this cool Video DonwloadHelper addon that allows you to download any video / audio / animated element of a website, in every quality options available.
It also has conversion options.

I just installed a youtube video downloader which allows me to download in mp4 in the webpage. Why specifically .avi ? It's like this doesn't exist anymore, mp4 can encapsulate all you need in 2014 ? Normally any of those websites or extensions will simply give you access to the same files, usually 360p and 720p mp4.
