how to get a big sounding mix?

Yup, that's the whole point of being a mixing engineer. That's the whole challenge. It's a career, and it takes time to get good at the craft. This is kind of like posting to a basketball forum and saying, "Hey guys, just trying to figure out how to get my jump shot to make it in the basket...

How do you guys bleep out swear words for radio edits?

Haha. You guys have some weird ideas. Either just cut the word out and have silence, or have them record an alternate version that sounds similar ("And I'm like, forget you"). That's what 99% of the "clean versions" on the radio sound like.

The Devil Wears Prada - Dead Throne

Songwriting is f-ing heavy. Way more metal than any other TDWP music. Clean vocal lines are for the most part sick (My Questions? Tasty). I agree with what seems to be the general consensus though: vocals are too low in the mix, guitars are too high - especially considering the unspectacular...

The Devil Wears Prada - Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord

The Devil Wears Prada's first full length. Why does this record sound so awful? I've heard that the band basically asked for it to suck and Joey regretfully complied. But it seems more likely to me that Joey was just starting to get into recording and had no clue what he was doing. The thing...

Two metalcore song clips - mixing critique welcome!

Thanks man! Yeah, I realize there is a lot to work on. I've gotten so used to the procedure of mixing like this that I just didn't know what to work on, but I'm not happy with how it sounds compared to my favorite records. I've been mixing for about a year and a half so I know there's a lot to...

Two metalcore song clips - mixing critique welcome!

BUMP. I fell to page two with no comments... Can anyone help? I know these mixes aren't quite professional-quality, but my objectivity is zero and I'm not sure what to work on from here.

    Rate this mix/master! (Post-hardcore / metalcore)

The snare does sound like poop, and I actually thought the dryness of the screams was pretty cool. It seems to be a pretty common thing in this genre to have a "small room" feeling to the screams, like the vocalist is standing in the control room. But yeah, go for a snare that has some body and...

Two metalcore song clips - mixing critique welcome!

These are clips from two different demos my band is throwing together. They haven't been taken into a proper studio yet so the drums are programmed, guitar is modeled, etc. In fact the only mic used is an SM-7 for the vocals. Obviously everything won't sound as good as if we actually had...

Sound replacement Plug-ins for Mac? (free or cheap)

I'm assuming you just need something to trigger samples from an audio file based on transients. Like drum replacement/sample layering. If so, check out auplSoft apTrigga. It's currently $55 and it works as well as or better than Drumagog for me.

How do you make a guitar sound like this?

I'm referring to the lead guitars - they have a unique tone that's different than the rhythm guitars, all the other lead guitars on this record, and really any tone I've ever heard before. It may be a delayed double track. The rhythm guitars, I'm pretty sure, are just simply palm muted and...

How do you make a guitar sound like this?

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6920288/01%20Be%20Careful%20What.mp3 This has always kind of baffled me, I've never been able to create a tone quite like this. Anybody out there have any pointers?

Need help blending kick drum and bass

A 2-point velocity range is really tiny, it's no wonder the kick sounds sort of robotic. I usually vary hits from 75ish to 110ish. I've never used Superior Drummer but I'm pretty sure this trick will work: Put the kick MIDI notes on a separate track, run it through SD, bounce/write that track...

    Post your studio/personal Facebook pages!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fed-By-Ravens-Studios/170871606306473 I JUST opened this up. I don't have my own studio per se (I'm a college student... living with my parents over the summer...) but I'm trying to start a business up mixing songs over the internet so that one day I don't have to...

will pay to have my song mixed.

I agree with most of these guys - I will mix it for free if you want but I won't send you my pt file. I'll explain how I did it though if you want. PM me if you are interested or want to hear past works.

Post your best mix and comment poster above you!

Much better mix! The snare is a lot more snappy and in-your-face. I like the smack of the kick too, what sample are you using? Are you mixing the DI with the bass? If so, I might try more of the amped bass and less DI, it's a little too grimy for me. The subs do well to add to the guitars...
