I have to add Dave Murray with Adrian Smith as a team - just made Maiden who they are!
Same with Degarmo/Wilton - Queensryche, not the same without Degarmo
Tommy Skeoch/Frank Hannon - Tesla
Victor Smolski - Rage
Tony Macalpine
Warren Demartini - Ratt
Adrain Vandenberg, John Sykes - Whitesnake
Doug Aldrich - Hurricane, Dio, now with Whitesnake
Reb Beech - Winger and Whitesnake
Richie Smabora - Bon Jovi
Steve Clark/Phil Collen - Def Leppard
Neil Schone - Journey
Hank Sherman/Michael Denner - Mercyful Fate
Wolf Hoffman - Accept
Jeff Waters - Annihlator
Jake E. Lee - Ozzy, Badlands
Mark Kendall - Great White
Michael Schenker - Scorpions, UFO
Paul Gilbert - Racer X, Mr. Big
Richie Blackmore - Rainbow/Purple
Alex Skolnick/Eric Peterson - Testament

Eddie Van Halen - l know...he's a dick now, but he is the one they all owe it to. If they do hammer ons, pull offs, E string bombs, etc. ( and they all do to an extent) this is the guy they got it from. There were others before that hinted at these techniques, but Eddie perfected them and made them standards for all to live by. Also, his odd rhythms made people stand up and take notice.

The same could be said for Yngwie and his arpeggio runs. And he does it on a scalloped fretboard...unbelievable.

Kirk Hammet must be added.

And -where- is Denis "Piggy" D'Amour?

And then there's perhaps the greatest.... (which hasn't been mentioned.. for shame) -- RON JARZOMEBEK

And not mentioning Iommi is ridiculous.

To name but a few:

Piotr Grudzinski (Riverside)
Jeff Loomis (Nevermore)
Tim Roth (Into Eternity)
Don Anderson and John Haughm (Agalloch)
Yossi Saharon (Sassi) (Orphaned Land)
Jari Mäenpää (Ex-Ensiferum, Wintersun)

I'm sure there are plenty of others whose work I thoroughly enjoy and some more obvious inclusions like Victor Smolski and Chris Broderick.

I forgot to mention the amazing tandem of :

Christofer Johnsson & Kristian Niemann of Therion. These guys have written/performed some of the best solos that I know. Incredibly beautiful, very emotional, and often just perfect for the songs. Therion has some of the most underrated guitar work.

How could you forget EDWARD VAN HALEN? He has been an influence on most if not all guitarist under the age of 40. You mention Zakk without RANDY RHOADS and Jake E. Lee was not mentioned either. This was a list of Metal right???

And Van Halen influenced metal. He wasn't metal. Though Ascension mentioned him. But its why I didn't mention Brian May (even if he did lay down the first thrash metal song =p). Same with why Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton (Cream days), and Jimmy Page weren't mentioned.

Holy crap nobody mentioned Ronnie Letekro?
Vinnie Moore
Jason Becker
Marty Friedman
Shawn Layne

I could go on and on but my post would be miles long. Hats off as always to my fav player Malmsteen and it was also really cool to see Andy LaRocque mentioned. Pete Black aslo deserves some recognition.

No one mentioned the following:

Chris Caffery
Al Pitrilli
Rusty Cooley
Drew Creel
Emppu Vuorinen
Mangus Carrlson
And there are lots of others that need to be mentioned, but it would make the lists like Perpet said Miles long.
