Amek 9098, eh? Those are pretty pricey. For $99 this Studio Projects VTB1 is tough to beat - better than many that I tried in the $500 -- $700 range. One day I will own a very nice tube mic pre... one day.

What were your settings on the Krank, BTW? Mine were:

pres 3 sweep 6 bass 4 mid 6 treb 3 master at 4

OK, Matt. I think I've got ya covered now...

I mastered my clip instead of leaving it stock, just basic Waves stuff... no biggie.

Keep in mind I have a $99 mic preamp and a 1x12 mesa cab with a V30.

I just put all the clips in a rotation, and I think my is killing on yours. Again, proving my theory that a 4x12 cab is NOT NECESSARY to get big guitars. Maybe I wrong, and no one has said shit about my clip, so... I guess this thread is now being ignored.

ALMOST FORGOT - Most importantly... this is Audix i5 and not that damn SM57. Would be SILLY for me to slam an SM57, but come on man... that darn thing... It's just been DONE. I think the Audix kills it for high gain guitar stuff, and I'm not alone. =)

It's not like I have a lot of $$...I just put two of them on a credit card and will keep the one I like best and return the others. I certainly can't afford to keep all three. That's why it's a shootout!

Anyway, I miked them up last night. It was not even close; the smaller Mesa ANNHILATED the other two. I don't know if I got a bad apple or something, but that Krank cab sounded terrible miked up. Obviously Andy got a great sound out of it, so I'll try some more (I only had time to try one speaker so far), but it sounded flubby on the bottom with an indistinct midrange and an annoying high end. The big Mesa was better, and the small Mesa was freaking perfect. This was with the Krank and 5150 heads.

Ahh, man, I forgot to search this post before I went to the guitar store today and put the over-sized Mesa cab on layaway. I'm sure both the smaller and over-sized Mesa cabs rock in both respects, I just thought the over-sized one was the one that killed.
