I agree, I use it for recording and am normally around 2-3.5, but I just retubed and was running it through it's paces and decided to see what it had for volume on it and it really doesn't seem to get any louder at or above 5, just more compressed really. Curious if it was just me that's experienced that.
I'd say you're right. You just get more power amp clipping. I had it on about 7 once when I didn't have a dummy load. Granted you could hear it clearly outside the studio, though it was just a mess all the same.

Sounds exactly like what I noticed. Not louder, just more clipping and not in a flattering way.
Again, I'm not standing in front of the amp on post gain 8 yelling "louder you fucker! louder!", it's volume output is more than adequate, just curious if this was a symptom or a normal operating characteristic.
This. My current Mesa rig runs out of headroom at around 1:00 on the master. Past Mesa/Marshall/Bogner/whatever stuff I've used has been pretty much the same way- you'll run out of clean headroom long before you have the MV knob up all the way.
