80's Hair bands.. Metal or Not?

I fully agree with Trixxi that there's a huge gap between hair and glam...
in the 80's the line between hair and metal was extremely thin I think.
Look at these pics off Queensryche ,Damien Thorne and Heir Apparent...
Pretty hairy I think but pure metal non the less...

Like many here I think it depends. I think there was a fine line between what was glam rock and what was hair metal and what was this that or the other, but I also think discounting altogether is a big mistake. I think it opened a lot of doors for other metal bands as well as opened the ears of many to metal.

That's the point I was trying to get across.
 
I'd agree to you guys, yes. But I'm not sure if you can look at Hair Metal as the thing that paved the way to the real stuff. I started with AC/DC, Helloween and Warlock then came Kiss, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Sodom. Which means I discovered Hair bands a long time after I had become a Metal fan. I respect and like these bands for the music they play(ed) and not for what they introduced me to.
 
I think some of them are a lot more Metal than others like MÖTLEY CRÜE, some RATT, some SKID ROW, some CINDERELLA while others like POISON, WARRANT or DANGER DANGER didn´t really have much Metal about them. Regardless of what you call them I enjoy some of those bands, especially CINDERELLA and MÖTLEY CRÜE.

Motley,Ratt,Skids, And Cinderella are my Top 4 Bands of that entire Era :grin:

Ratt was good too until Reach for the Sky. I think Detonator has it's moments, but it's a far cry from their classic stuff. I can take or leave Skid Row, I loath 18 & Life, Youth Gone Wild & I Remember You. I do like Slave to the Grind.
It's almost like they were written by a different band...
 
I think most of the posts in this thread has been more focused on the fashion sense of the hair bands then the music.. also its not a thread hating or disliking the bands.. i myself like some of them and have some of their albums.. this forum is just whether you considered them metal or not at the time if not now.. based on their music and not what they wore.. I understand if some of these bands lead you to more heavier and definetly metal bands.. but that still doesnt make them a metal band to begin with.. i can give a different example.. Before metal i listened to classic rock bands.. and one of the ones i listened to was Cream.. now they lead me to more heavier bands such as Black Sabbath.. but I think we can all agree that Cream is not a metal band and really just a hard rock band for it's time much like i think the hair bands were only hard rock for the 80's and not metal (and no arguments about which hair bands.. cause im pretty sure its already been established i mean the Poison, Warrant, Danger Danger type of bands.. dont make me pull ur nose hairs and switch them with your pube hairs lol ).. The hair bands are usually considered metal because of the flashy guitar parts they play ala Eddie VH but nonetheless flashy guitar parts doesnt make it any more metal then Cream was because of Claptons flashy playing (for its time his playing was flashy much like Hendrix).. and they definetly are not metal because of long hair,makeup (for argument sakes cause everyone focuses on the fashion of the bands more, to me looking like a chick was never very "Metal" to me.. Scary looking makeup like Alice Cooper, Dee Snider, King Diamond etc. were definetly "Metal" looking & sounding to me and to a large extent also KISS even though i dont consider them metal.KISS along with Aerosmith were definetly the influence in sound to the "Hair" bands and some of its Fashion) , spandex/leather pants, bandana's on their microphone stands ala Steven Tyler etc.. Anyways what Sixx said about Ratt, Crue, Skids etc.. i agree with.. <shrugs> < covers my nuts now before someone kicks em for speaking my mind on a touchy subject> :-X

Or even Motley Crue, regardless of what Nikki Sixx thinks.
They weren't & never will be metal. They have some elements,
some more than others. Honestly, when I think metal I think Maiden,
Motorhead, Sabbath, stuff like that...
But what do I know? eveyone has their own view on what is & isn't?
Was Trixter metal? I hope we call answer this with a resounding "no!"
