Alright so I replied to this ad on craigslist for a death metal looking for a guitarist, and they answered me yesterday telling me that I can drop by either today or tuesday at band practice and to learn 2 songs that they sent me. The material is not easy, and I've barely got one song's riffs down not counting the transitions and breakdowns. I really want this opportunity, because their drummer is awesome and they are pretty much a complete carbon copy of Vital Remains, and it would be hella fun to get on stage with them. Should I come in today and half ass the audition, or email them that I'm coming on tuesday?

Thanks as always.

Half-assing an audition, if they're serious, will make them feel concerned that you're not serious enough to work on their stuff, or talented enough to learn it, IMO. I'd suggest that you send them a courtesy e-mail telling them, briefly and without turning into a gushing, drooling fanboi, about how excited you are about the material, and let them know you'll be there on Tuesday.

Agreed.

Every gig I've ever gotten has been a result of showing up ready to play, knowing the songs front to back. Most guitarists are complete homunculus idiots who have no idea what they're doing, which really makes the audition process unbelievably painful.

Sit down and take a couple hours to learn the songs. It'll blow them away.

fucking word. if we had someone come in who was chill and knew all of our songs that would've made auditioning in the past soooo much easier. instead we've never had a guitarist that I DIDN'T have to sit and waste hours with teaching him songs riff by riff. i feel like i'm the only one who thinks that when auditioning for a band you should know at least part of their stuff and then learn it all once you get in or don't do it at all (I auditioned for a band once and didn't have time to learn the songs and didn't think I could have time for it so instead of wasting their time I told them straight up before getting too invested in it).

stay home, don't drink, focus, and learn the material they asked you to, show up on Tuesday knowing the songs and confident that you know them, this will impress them and you will likely get the gig

Being a guitarist, I fucking hate other guitarists who can't get their shit straight. If you wanna play in the band, make an effort to PLAY in the band.

I'm brutal with them...if you need me to show you the riffs, I'll show them to you and even write some stuff down if you need. The next time we have practice, you better know that shit or we'll start looking for another guy. You don't have to know every single song, but knowing even one song really well is such a relief. It not only shows that you are able to play but that you are serious and dedicated.

When is Nevermore going to get a 2nd guitarist? Are you guys going to get one before the next tour or just do it as a 4 piece?

Thanks all. I will be doin it Tuesday. And Warrel, you made my day 15 minutes before the day's done. Fucking Broderick and Loomis are back at it again. *Raises semi-open fist in the air in epic cheesy fashion*
