A new standard in e-drums?!?!?!

How's that? Aren't those mesh heads?

Nope, cos mesh heads are 'too bouncy' (I've never really played an ekit), so it seems to be a hybrid drum head..

I don't think it's a matter of taste. I'm also curious - I want to hear if SSD really can sound realistic when used properly.

Slate can't do 'real drummer'. It can do 'real drummer who's been sample replaced'.

It kinda defeats the purpose of an e-kit to me with its size and potential volume.

Maybe these heads make some fine triggers but I really doubt they will sell them separately.

Yeah, I watched the video again and it indeed is not a mesh head - however, there's no mention how loud they are. So chances are, as you said, that they might be pretty loud.

Man, that guy really looks and sounds like he really doesn't give a fuck...

Yeah, this is how I see it, without ever having used SSD. I'm still interested in it, for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

Couple of things to note about this video:

1.) A couple of times you can clearly see the spokesperson reading the teleprompter.

2.) I love how Pearl is not only promoting the E-Kit, but also their Demon Drive pedals. ^.^

3.) Wouldn't "real brass cymbals" make a whole hell of a lot of noise? I know my "real brass cymbals" on my acoustic kit definitely do. Depending on how loud those things actually are, I could see problems with live use. Considering, when I play a show at a small venue, there is no reason AT ALL to mic my cymbals, they are plenty loud enough. And I'm assuming that those "E-Cymbals" sound pretty shitty. :/ Even if you had the sample replacement on the cymbals, wouldn't the samples fight for a place over the actual noise of the cymbal?

:rock::rock::rock:

Btw, anyone know how much this thing would set you back?

Agreed - as a drummer I'd never buy these. I'd buy an e-kit to either keep on the side of my real kit for synthetic sounds, so I'd want it to be small OR I'd want an e-kit set up for quick recording and jamming, something I could keep in the corner of the room unlike my real kits. This doesn't fit either of those criteria.

On a side note, Gene Okamoto knows every single Pearl drum inside and out; I had emailed him on a whim a few years back to see if I could track down some parts for a mid-80's Export kit and he was on the ball. Doing product demos definitely doesn't appear to be his thing :)

i mean my alesis e kit is noisey as hell, and its a bit of a pain in the arse, id rather just play and record my real kit and save the hastle and have the real element of the cymbals overheads.

the only thing i see cool about it is the drum module.. being able to load in all those samples, such as the slate ones, which would be great for live triggering rather than having to run into the slate kontakt player in a comp.

the black guy laughs at the sound he hears when he chokes the small crash

and i'll admit, its really funny. it just mutes, as in, doesnt play a sound haha.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. He definitely didn't seem impressed at some points, but they tried to do their best to make him look like he's impressed  well, he got paid either way.

Hate to keep bringing it up, but even my fucking TD-6 doesn't sound like that when the cymbals are choked. The sound just doesn't vanish when you grab the cymbal. It's not natural to the slightest. If I were Pearl, I wouldn't have shown that cymbal-choke thing on the video.

Meh. Not interested. Looks like the better and bigger kits played in the video had 2 of the modules set up. Only the 5 piece kit used 1. He says in the vid 12 faders and I only saw 6? Maybe I'm mistaken there.

Neither Jordisan or Dennis Chambers (!) seemed very comfortable or impressed. I'd like to hear what they had to say about it but their endorsements were conspicuously absent!

Either way, that's a terrible video they've put together. I'm interested in seeing some actual facts, and know whether or not those drums are acoustically loud. I might be interested in the heads and triggers, but not in the module. I'm somehow feeling though, that I'm never going to see those inside a store around these parts. We'll see.
