everythings hard in music.. finding people for a band, making a connection once you find people, finding places to play, getting your music out, selling music, etc. etc.
If a band wants to succeed, especially in metal, they'll need to tour extensively. Good management helps a lot too.. There really is no simple answer I guess, lots of things to need to come into play for a band to succeed, including luck.
