I'd suggest not spending a lot of money on a guitar until you're sure you want to stick with it. An acoustic or an electric will do; make sure the strings are close to the neck. An acoustic with a thinner neck would be a good thing because some of them are way too thick. Get a chord diagram book that has almost every chord in it. Maybe also look for a beginner book that has finger exercises, scales some simple songs, and strumming exercises,etc.
