Adding presence on the amp vs adding it in post-recording

I want to break out the 5150 now and mess with it. I think I was running treble around 6-7 and last I played it, it just seemed harsh and buzzy to me. Sort of flat and lifeless. I think I need a retube as well as tweak my settings a bit. I just always fall back to the Mark IV every time I try the Peavey.

i prefer to go dark and add top if i need it. Removing high end is always more difficult to me

+1

In my experience once you're done filtering the lower frequencies and mids on a guitar track to fit it into the mix, you've effectively 'boosted' the highs comparatively anyway. If you started out with something with a lot of highs dialed in or a trebly mic position I can imagine things getting harsh fast.
