Check out Fractal Gates if you don't know them. A French melodeath band that has a lot of spacey/E.T. themes in their lyrics. They're really melodic and quite cool.

Never been to the UP, I'm metro detroit area myself. But I had a buddy that lived in Mt Pleasant, pretty much the furthest north I've ever gone, and dude had never seen a black person at age 24 We took him to Detroit for some fun and his eyes were like saucers the whole time. I'd imagine the UP is similar.

Nice. I've been to Houghton before. Very nice city. I went to The Library once (I think that was the name of the resturant/bar). I thought it was pretty good.
