Alexi vs. John Petrucci

Alexi, because of his wonderful note choices. Plus, he has a sense of melody. Dream Theater is quite talented if not the best, but they lack melody and feeling.

I think the main reason why people like LTE better than DT or don't even like DT at all is because of Labrie. I personally love Labrie's voice. I don't think DT would be DT without him. If you think Labrie is bad, go check out some stuff from the When Day and Dream Unite album and tell me that Charlie sounds better than Labrie.

Like I said before, DT's lineup is perfect, at least in my opinion, along with most DT fans.

In my case no ... i like Labrie on the last albums (though live he is very mediocre) but i dont know ... there is something magic about LTE than makes me like them even more than dt

when dream and day unite shouldnt even be a DT album at all lolol

I'm a fan of petrucci (more of LTE than DT) and my fav would be petrucci but comparing him to alexi is nonsence ... two different realities, stiles, playing, experience, knowlage... whatever

And since probably some of you dont know what the hell is mattias talking about BERKLEE ... is a usa music school ... the most prestigious usa music school ... some well know musicians studied there (joe stump, paul masvidal and santiago dobles per example) !

Petrucci and Portnoy or whatever his name is, for example.

Jesus...such a large response...alot of you do have points though about different styles of play and how technical there music is... now if this was on a different board i think there might be some different views. i myself like them both, and to all respect to both of them i cant really choose a better player.

FINALLY! I´ve been laughing to this thread for something like 10mins. People really think someone like Alexi can even be compared to a supreme musician/guitarist like Petrucci? I mean Alexi is defenitely one of the best finnish metalguitarist I know, but come on! If you don´t know anything about musictheory it might sound cool at first when you hear Alexi soloing some Major/Minor arpeggios and -scales , but those 'tricks' are so used, that soon you can´t even say the difference between those solos. That is what starts to sound like boring!
Don´t get me wrong. I really think alexi is a great guitarist, but lately I´ve started to notice that his solos have started to sound like "wait a second... I´ve heard this before". And besides: Alexi is still very young and he´s getting better and better. So it´s a bit like comparing a young still learning student to the master who´s experienced it all.
I hope you got my point.
