Alexi vs. John Petrucci

Alexi does only shred, while John also uses other influences in his music and solos.
I say, John Petrucci is a far better guitarist.

He is able to play many styles of music and shows that in Dream Theater.
I would also say that he beats Alexi in shredding.

However, I like Alexi next to Vai, Loomis, Friedman, Becker and Eklundh best.

Yeah, Loomis a cool guy, but who is Eklundh

dt just doesnt get to me i think they try to be too tech and they cant pull it off. what i mean is they are all great musicians but they arent good songwriters, plus all their songs start to lag. and too the kid who said alexis solos sound the same has no clue what hes talking about.

Yes, I agree with you. Alexi is better in writing songs and that's the most imporatant. :)

Well, ive not been here for a while and look at this. Hmm....

You mus tbe wrong to try to compare those 2 superior guitarists. First of all, look at the time they both have been playing guitar. Im not a big fan of DT, but as far as I know JP played a time before the Alexi was taking his firsts steps with guitar.

If we can imagine Aluu who plays the same period of time that John, he would defenetly be much better, but for now Alexi is just chasing John, even if his not his idol or sth.
Hell be better but as for now hes a little bit worst than John.

Thats my opinion :D

Yeah guys. You really need to look at it from a different side here. The question is NOT who do you like better. The question is, who is a better guitarist. Sure the styles are different and Alexi IS a god, but so is John (in my eyes). Compare the fact(s) that John has been playing far longer than Alexi and also the fact that John took formal lessons and studied Music Theory and such at Berklee. Who gives a shit if you don't like DT, that's not the question. If you don't know and are just saying Alexi, I think you need to listen to some Petrucci.

um the amount of music theory you know doesn't make you superior. dumbass.
So you didn´t get my point ? The amount of theory doesn´t by it self, but when you know how to use it right, it does :).

Yeah, the amount of music theory knowledge is the thing that makes u superior, stygian do u think that alexi doesnt know the notes, scales or he didnt had to memoraize the notes on the neck?

I know some ppl, that knows theory and they can strike olny one double note sound which kick my ass and makes me suffer...

on technicality petrucci slaughters most people but his music can be very boring. I much prefer alexi because he is technical yet writes great melodies and melodic solos. i much prefer players like jesper stromblad to players like steve vai.
