So I've been hearing a lot of reverence for Shawn Lane, Tony Macalpine, Allen Holdsworth around here. Any idea where to find some of the music? (hopefully for free)

Tony MacAlpine is obviously a brilliant solo artist, but since I can't find any solo samples, visit Planet X which, although he has now left still contains samples.
If you have the G3 DVD with Baron Malmhammer on it, MacAlpine's on that during Steve Vai's set playing keyboard and guitar. Can't remember if that's particularly fusion-like. Doubt it knowing Vai - probably just weird noises (how does that constitute good music again?).

Yes. I like all of them. You can download them from dc++. I recommend you check these jazz, fusion guitarist's and bands.

Tribal Tech (guitarist - Scott Henderson. He has good solo cd's too)
John Maclaughlin
Planet X
Mike Stern (maybe more grooving jazzfusion, funk)
Pat Metheny
Frank Gambale

And many others..

IVE HEARD Al once got his ass kicked by Paco de lucia, seriously i think once they got in a fight or something ,or maybe its just one of those rumours:confused:

The Fusion disc I listen to the most is Allan Holdsworth's 16 Men of Tain...great album...its a trio, him, a drummer, and an upright bassist, and theres also a trumpet soloist on a few tracks. Really awesome stuff, I highly reccomend it.

Fatest... heh. Yeah, Al Di Meola is definitely one of the best if not the best. He's amazing. Check out the CD "Friday Night In San Francisco." It's just him, Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin and a few acoustic guitars. It's awesome.
