I wish I could just sit with a friend who could explain it all to me. I get nervous around teachers and it affects my abillity to focus and grasp concepts.

It may be easier if you guys count it like:
for 3/4 time, 1 & 2 & 3 & you say and out loud to signify the up beat. basically tap your foot to that, the numbers are when you hit the floor, the and is when your foot is in the air. Thats what they teach you in school.
In 6/8 the feel is different.
1 & uh 2 & uh with the numbers getting the downbeat.
that any easier to comprehend?

I'll make this easy for all of you. It's not a difficult beat, it doesn't matter how you break it down, whether it be in 4/4 triplet feel, 3/4, or 6/8...the point of it is that it is synchopated ....ie emphasising notes that are usually quiet. Here it is for those of you who can read standard notation (learn if you can't). For the sake of simplicity I left out ghost notes that Lopez employs on the off beats on the snare (which further provides synchopation). Enjoy.
