I was bored tonight, so I decided to attempt a top-10 list of the best American metal bands of all time. And I wanted some input on it, so here it is. Feel free to debate any of the listings below.

Note: if you're the type of person who considers this stuff to be subjective... then don't bother posting. I think there's plenty of room for objective debate here, even if it's not necessarily a scientific topic.

The reason I pick the U.S. in particular as opposed to another (better) country, or the world as a whole, is because I think the choices are more clear-cut in the pool of American artists. A country like England would be pretty hard to evaluate due to the relatively high number of high-quality, ground-breaking bands; but looking at the below list, you'll notice that there's a pretty wide variation in quality from the top to the bottom (which, hopefully, isn't simply due to my metal noob-hood).

Anyway, here's my list:

1) Metallica
2) Type O Negative
3) Alice in Chains
4) Morbid Angel
5) Down
6) Kyuss
7) Slayer
8) Clutch
9) Dio
10) Pantera

Again, this is not a "my favorites" list. The only bands on there that I listen to with any regularity are Morbid Angel, Metallica, and Down. The list takes into account factors like songwriting quality, uniqueness, originality, personality, and volume of quality output.

All critiques/corrections/alternative lists are welcome.

While they are great, I personally wouldn't consider Type O Negative, Kyuss and Alice in Chains metal bands.

Making such lists IS subjective, and you can't argue otherwise. Just like you can't objectively say that Black Sabbath is the greatest metal band of all time. Now let me give my subjective opinion. My list would include: Slayer, Possessed, Morbid Angel, Death, Suffocation, Arghoslent, Incantation, Immolation, among others.

Sabbath may not have been the greatest metal band of all time, but you can't argue with the fact that they were the most influential.

Your list is a bit heavy on death metal, further proving your point about subjective bias.

A good list I'm thinking of would have an equal mix of Thrash and Death Metal innovators from their respective scenes such as the Bay Area, Florida and New York.

And then comes the argument of whether influential = great. The truth is that it's the case the majority of the time, but not absolute.

They are borderline, but they're still very dark, heavy bands. Consider them 'alternates' if you wish.

Sure it can't be perfectly objective, but you can still pick criteria that most people can agree corresponds to creative and effective musicianship. Hence the criteria I listed in my first post.

Given that, I can't see all those death metal bands making it onto a list like this, as they're borrowing so many ideas from each other. And it's possible that I ranked Morbid Angel (the only DM on my list) too high, since they really weren't very groundbreaking (though possibly pretty unique). I just find their songwriting to be leagues ahead of any other DM band I've heard. I still need to listen to more Death though.

And the most original.

They also get major points on songwriting quality.

But anyway, let's not get into non-American bands on this thread.

If you put Metallica there's no need for Slayer.

band who could make the list:
Metallica
Possessed
Morbid Angel
Death
Dio
Kyuss
Dream Theater
Megadeth
2 more but they should not be death, thrash, doubt there's influential black from the US, doom not sure.. speed maybe?

there's quite a lot of good bands that could make it: Atheist, Obituary, Suffocation, Faith no More, Testament, vio-lence, Demoliton Hammer, Xasthur, Agent Steel, etc.

The only influential US Black Metal was influential unto itself.
