America's greatest metal artists

Hmm... gonna be pretty hard to have a cross-genre discussion here with all the death/black fanatics on the board. :Smug:

edit: wow there were a lot of posts in the last few minutes

I only agree with Metallica, Morbid Angel, and Slayer being on that list. Maybe Dio too. There are too many non-metal bands, and only one extreme metal band. Death has to be there. That's a glaring omission. Suffocation probably should be there for their contributions to brutal death. I would say Xasthur should be there. They are the USBM band, and the polarizing opinions on the band reflect how people tend to feel about the whole scene. Dream Theater was a pretty important band. Atheist could be there too.

Interesting thread...

2) Type O Negative
Marginal band, no way they should beat out pioneering death and thrash metal bands.

3) Alice in Chains
8) Clutch
Not really metal bands.

Popular but more of a throwback kind of group, wouldn't really call them influential or even extremely original. Hard to even find a reason to put them ahead of Pantera by most criteria.

10) Pantera
Lots of obvious reasons to leave them off (as in their potentially detrimental overall influence on metal) that should be considered.

Would suggest:

Slayer
Metallica
Death/Mantas
Possessed
Morbid Angel
Slayer
Manowar
Cynic/Atheist
Sleep/Kyuss
Suffocation

...for further consideration.

My list would have these 10 bands, but there's now way in hell I'm going to try to order them.

Metallica
Slayer
Morbid Angel
Suffocation
Xasthur
Pantera
Possessed
Dream Theater
Dio
Testament

If you put Metallica there's no need for Slayer.

Well, it's not supposed to be a "one band per genre only" list, but Slayer is a pretty iffy one. The bulk of their groundbreaking material from the '80s really was pretty monotonous.

band who could make the list:
Metallica
Possessed
Morbid Angel
Death
Dio
Kyuss
Dream Theater
Megadeth
2 more but they should not be death, thrash, doubt there's influential black from the US, doom not sure.. speed maybe?

Yeah, I forgot about Dream Theater. They've done some amazing stuff, but from my recollection they're pretty hit-and-miss as far as the great material goes.

Megadeth I'm not sure about. They weren't ever very original, but they were one of the better songwriters in thrash. They're also very inconsistent as far as quality goes.

there's quite a lot of good bands that could make it: Atheist, Obituary, Suffocation, Faith no More, Testament, vio-lence, Demoliton Hammer, Xasthur, Agent Steel, etc.

I haven't listened to a single fucking band you list here, so beats me. Looks like there are some good options there though.

I picked them mainly based on songwriting quality and personality/wit, but yeah, they're not especially groundbreaking.

Not really metal bands.

You just don't want them beating out all those thrash/death bands you'd put on the list. :p

Popular but more of a throwback kind of group, wouldn't really call them influential or even extremely original. Hard to even find a reason to put them ahead of Pantera by most criteria.

Another songwriting-based pick. Obviously not original by any stretch of the imagination, but they are damn good at what they do.

Lots of obvious reasons to leave them off (as in their potentially detrimental overall influence on metal) that should be considered.

You'd better come up with some more obvious reasons than that, because the one you give has nothing to do with the band's actual music. They had a pretty unique sound for their time. Plus, they probably influenced a lot of great Southern/sludge bands along with all the shit metalcore they influenced.

these lists are fucking awful

fates warning
slayer
incantation
immolation
averse sefira
demoncy
infester
autopsy
morbid angel
anacrusis

or something to that effect

I guess DRI could make it (I guess they were one of the first crossover band), TERRORIZER (how could we forgot them? One of the first grind band), Repulsion lesser known.

Also there could be a hard rock band like Twisted Sister in there..

Have you even listened to any of the bands under discussion that aren't death, black, or thrash?

If you are going by influence then you might want to add Van Halen.
