Amps for modern rock besides the Recto

That's a pretty damn broad question. How about these to get you started:

Any other Mesa ( like the Mark IV, Roadster, Stiletto, Express, TRIAXIS )
Framus
Soldano
Engl
Hughes and Kettner
Peavey
Splawn
Bogner
VHT

I could go on...

You have a particular tone you're after? What are you looking to replace?

Orange
Orange
Orange

(especially rocker(verb) or thunderverb series )

Also Peavey Classic 30/50... I love those little fuckers.

Everything that Marshall has made(I dont count their solidstates as Marshall.), Orange, Vox AC30, Randall and by my oppinion the best Modern Rock amp is the Ampeg VL-1002(Tough choice between this one and Marshal JCM 800 2203.).

Sorry, I could have be clearer on my request.

I currently have a Soldano SLO 100 clone. It pretty much a great amp and was even better than a 5150 a buddy brought some time ago to record (the green channel was beefier, tho). However, I feel it does not have strong low mids and I am looking exactly at that.

So....Orange Rockerverb sounds great from some samples i listened, but maybe is a little too loose sounding for something heavier / faster. I had a Mesa Dc3 a while ago which is very similar to a Mark, and i really couldnt get a thick tone out of it (tried it only with Eminence Legend speakers on a 2x12, tho). Some say Engls are too scooped and hi-gain for everything else other than metal, and I didnt have much luck with Peaveys (my amp sounds better than the 5150s i played, and the Classics I played were not 'modern rock' enough).

Ideally, I need something close to a Recto. What do you guys say ?

I don't recall whether 6L6's or EL34's are stock in the SLO but have you tried swapping tube types or even a different brand? That can make a HUGE difference. Also the cab you use makes more difference than you might believe. I used to think a 4x12 with V30's was a 4x12 with V30s... then I heard for myself.

I think if I was gonna buy a Mesa at this point I'd HAVE to get a Roadster. It's got the Recto sound and some amazing cleans ( per Mesas' claims anyway ). I'm a bit spoiled though having a Triaxis 2:Ninety. I'm very much accustomed to having several very differnet sounds at the touch of a footswitch. I don't know if I could ever go back to a simple 2 channel amp.

Yeah I don't really know of any amp that is only good for metal...to me I've never found that any amp is good for only one thing...if you are having problems getting rock tones out of anything then you are doing something wrong. It's not like when you turn the gain knob on any amp that it's instant metal or anything, the gain knob has a gradual increase while you turn it...so if there is too much gain maybe try turning the gain knob down?

Sorry, I just don't understand somebody saying an amp has too much gain...it's as simple as not having the knob so high. I think what you should really be concerned about is the voicing of the amp. Certain voicings work better for rock music, i.e. Marshalls and their midrange hump/grind, but I can honestly say that any amp I've ever used or recorded (which is a lot) for a metal project could easily do rock.

the road king, the pimped version of the roadster is easily the most versatile tube amp ever made. it is like an authentic amp modeler. i have a version 1 which does not have the lone star channel but the cleans, brutal recto, and everything in between is sooooo good.

the 3rd channel with mixed el34 and 6L6 in vintage mode is SUCH a good rock channel. with moderate amounts of gain and the right power settings you get a very modern approach at the brown sound. the road king II just takes it to a new level with an identical channel from the lone star which has ridiculous cleans. very much recommend that amp.

Diezel VH4.

4 channels for maximum versatility and sheer tone.

channel 1 is beautiful for cleans.
channel 2 is light to medium gain, useless for metal players but great for overdriven rock
channel 3 is super fat but tight, for heavy rhythm playing. Ideal for metal but is just as good for heavier rock.
channel 4... super saturated gain for brutal metal or sweet lead playing.

I'm biased of course, but then again I bought it for all the above.
