An Offical Royal Carnage Roundtable: Darkthrone

Though I'm by no means an expert on Darkthrone like some of you 'round these parts, I think I've heard enough now to at least rank the albums I have heard.

Of the 5 I've heard, here's how I value them:
1. Transilvanian Hunger
2. Under A Funeral Moon
3. Hate Them
4. A Blaze In The Northern Sky
5. Soulside Journey

I own, but have yet to listen to with any depth:
Plaguewielder
Preparing For War
Ravishing Grimness

Am I missing any others?

Hey Erik, out of curiosity, what would you have given Hate Them in a review? I've already scored the album after a few listens, so my rating could change slightly, but it probably won't. I really, really like the album. Well?

Panzerfaust slays Hate Them in each and every regard really. Hate Them is their best since Total Death, it's a good album for what it is, but nothing really comes close to old Darkthrone...

That's cool, I just love how the riffs are so front and center, and everything is headbangingly wicked. Of course I score it higher than you (but that's to be expected). I gots to get me hands on Panzerfaust.

Erik - perhaps you can comment here. When I listen to Panzerfaust, I find the production to be just perfect for the atmosphere they create. For example, the vocals are so prominent (with possibly a tiny hint of echo), that it actually sounds like Fenriz is standing right in front of you.

I just think Panzerfaust comes 'out of the speakers' so well, it's difficult to articulate I guess...

Strange that, because that would have meant that the DRUMS would've been mixed loudly... Nocturno Culto is Darkthrone's vocalist. :p

Anyway, I completely agree with what you say. Lots of people complain about the very up-front vocals on Panzerfaust, and about how it sounds like Nocturno was drunk while recording them (listen to "Quintessence", he he. He can't possibly have been sober while doing those)

Panzerfaust is definitely very underrated. A bit too short, though, and a bit strange in that 2 of the songs could've fit on Transilvanian Hunger while the others are total Celtic Frost worship.

 hehe, well, I'm only human (and on 3 hours sleep). o_O

I love the vocal prominence. It's the first thing that I liked about the album.

N. Ciltos voice is so haunting on En Vind Av Sorg. as soon as that song comes on i get chills. the raw anger and pain in his voice is stunning at times. Definetley my all time fav. DT song. Hate them has its moments. Fucked up and ready to die and In honor, are a few of my favs. I really enjoy how fenriz has gone back to his old drumming styles in the days of "ablaze..."

It's the urgency with which the album starts on that song. It's unrelenting really, and quite barbaric.

I'm sure Hate Them is ok but I can't listen to it really - I'm going to leave it for a while because I'm finding so much better elsewhere these days. I bet I'll like it in about 12 months, when I'm in the mood for something less complex.
