Andy which do you like the best...

tracking, without a doubt. I tend to do more mixing these days, thats mixing with a capital F. Tracking is more creative and I enjoy it when the drum tones are coming together and when you get the results you are looking for. I know you can say all this about mixing also, but it's fun dealing with the actual musician , destroying them, breaking them down and crushing their egos hahaha.

that's surprising...

I was thinking that with mixing you're much more in control (assuming descent tracking) and more artistic in nature... yeah, ego crushing... ;)

Maybe mixing is no longer the challenge it once was and with little territory still to conquer, while tracking is always a challenge

thanks

I love the psychological aspect of tracking, engineers/producers don't get enough credit for all the mind games we play in the studio!

On a more serious note, there's an article in a recent Tape Op where some dude (can't recall his name) said that the most important aspect of tracking is setting headphone levels correctly. This probably pertains a little less to metal but it's still important nevertheless.

One thing I've been noticing is that when tracking my own guitars I put most of my focus on playing tight, making sure that I pick coherently with the kicks and snare. In the past I have not been putting enough emphasis on the finesse of my picking, i.e. angle of pick, weight of palm mute, and most recently I've gotten a better sound by picking more toward the neck as opposed to where I've been picking, which is basically as close to the bridge as possible....ahem, my point being that if I would have spent more time getting the headphone levels better than I would have discovered a lot of this stuff a while back methinks.
