Andy, would you....

So, is it better to close-mic the cab in a closet, than close-mic it in an untreated room for that up-front metal sound? What's the difference?

INAB I'd rather have plenty of space w/o walls and use baffles if I'm getting too much room. You can always move a baffle if you don't like what it's doing, but you are stuck w/ the walls. If the closet is completely untreated too you are way more likely to get reflections (in the mic) than if the reflections are off of walls that are a couple meters away.....plus it is a shitload easier to maneuver the mic and stand in a decent sized room.

Big untreated room with a fluffy pillow right infront of the amp (laying down, without being intrusive to the mic stand) and a bit of foam/ pillows at the sides of the amp- "standing up" (leaning against the amp if need be).
If you have enough shit left over, even have something dead behind the mic stand- rapists and murderers work well (;p), or if you dont have anything left over, just "aim" the amp towards a corner, but from roughly the centre of the room.
Just use your logic when placing the amp as to where the reflections are going to go, and where you want them to go- together with a few pillows will work fine ina big room.
Small, untreated rooms such major ass.
