Anti Virus software

Fellas, all you need is the following:

Spybot, free
AVG Anti virus, free
PC tools firewall, free
Ccleaner, free

job done! for free. Common sense is also pretty handy. If its a designated audio PC not connected to the Internet and you dont use pirate plugins, dont bother with any of it (unless you really dont know what you're doing with a computer). Or get something really lightweight.

I have used Symantec Antivirus version 10.0 OEM for 2 years 'til now and never had any problem with virus/spyware.
This is very very old version of Norton AV now, so its performance is amazing! It's very smooth, very light! I update it weekly, of cause.
This version is very rare now, so if you like it, I will upload and send to you.

Don't know what file corruptions Moonlapse is talking about...
You can configure AVG either to do things automatically or to prompt for action.
It seems to recognize all registry or file tampering executables as threats, even when they aren't.
Other than that it's a decent antivirus...

But no antivirus can save you from clicking the totally wrong things, only your common sense. That and stay off the porn sites... :D

I don't even have anti virus software.

If I ever get infected I know how to get rid of it anyway :D But I never get infected. In fact...I haven't had a Computer ever be damaged by a Virus/Spyware/Malmare ever. They have had minor infections which I remove immediately.

I deal with this all the time at work.

In other words. More stupid advice!

sounds like i have the same unfortunate job

:D Any change of preferences 3years later?

I don't have a separate PC for other activities and have been using Windows XP SP3 without an antivirus software for a long time. This idiot client of mine shoved in a pen-drive of his and now everything's sluggish. Tried looking deep into the problems, everything seems fine. The registry, junk files, disk defragmentation, registry defragmentation.

Please name a few great antivirus software that are easy on the cpu. I'm trying to stay away from those 'total internet security, c*** protection suite' bullshit. My ISP's got extreme security measures. Most of my clients can't afford CD-RW's (at least that's what I assume *sarcasm*). I can't convince defensive people without being rude. Poor conversational skills. I'm Sagittarius, but Moon in Pisces.

No Freeware please. AVG2011 pissed me off yesterday. I had to go through hell to uninstall it! Figured later on that I have to stop all its background bull-crap from services.msc for uninstallation. Pain.

Thanks in advance.

On my windows setups I used eset nod which I never had any problems with. Since I'm on mac I use Sophos Anti Virus which is completely free for osx.

The new Kaspersky Pure wins all. Costs real money but its well worth it. Easy on CPU, easy to use, does the job perfectly.

Using Kaspersky Internet Security for around 4 years (different versions).
There was some problems with Cubase and version 2009 (only Cubase, other hosts did not suffer), but it was solved with 2010 version.
No any issues with security. Don`t tried 2011 because of laziness, just bought another box and got license :)

Just my opinion....

Nod32 sucks.. the detection is great for the most part, but after having it for 3 years, it can made my systems unstable. it damn near crippled to laptop to the point where I seriously thought I had a dying hdd or ram as it would randomly spike the mem and cpu to the point where the hdd would seem like it's frozen and all programs would become unresponsive for 30sec-2min, completely randomly and quite frequently.

AVG; I completely hate... very inconsistent detection, and missed pretty much all things on my computer and I had to use it in conjunction with Malware Bytes and S&D, and those two programs generally found everything.

Norton and Mccaffee are resource hogs IMO, also had to use them in conjunction with MalwareBytes and S&D as well, though their detection is nowheres no near as bad as AVG.

My suggestions though would be either Avira or MSE. Microsoft Security Essentials is my current goto, but if I had any issues with it Avira is just as nice IMO.

Just put it this way, I had let my friend use my computer and he tried streaming UFC or something and got some nasty virii on it, I scanned it with AVG, Symantec Online, Malware Bytes, Spyware S&D, a demo of something else I can't recall at the moment and they all came back clean. I installed MSE and did a quick scan, it picked up about 20+ issues and it's been my goto since. It's crazy to think about it, but there is the possibility that most of those virii were on my computer for years NOT being detected by all of those other programs. FFS.

Also, poidaobi; there is no possible way to know you're computer isn't infected unless you scan it with a proper antivirus, 95% of the time it's not always so obvious.

Everyone who claims "i have never been infected" is just unaware of it :) There is always a few virus going through your antivirus defense. In all specialized tests, most of anti virus let a little % of them pass, and it's not the same ones for each antivirus. And few of those virus would send you a message saying "hey dude, i have infected your PC". Most of them can be not too dangerous though, just being trojan participating in spam mailing or just sleeping there.

My current computer also says i'm clean, but I'm pretty sure if I scan it with all the softwares available, I'll find a few of them hidden somewhere in my system.

I recently cleansed a friend's PC. I just went with Malwarebyte's, and it found 25 "advertisement" trojans.

And BTW, I use Avira Antivirus (free) and I like it. It may not be the best one, but it's light, efficient, not too intrusive in your workflow, and free.

Avira + CCleaner + free auslgogics software + Malwarebyte's = never had a problem in many many years caused by a virus.

Three years later, i'm on windows 7 instead of XP so far more stability. Only using one program now and that is f-secure client security. New version is very lightweight in comparison to previous ones which is good too. Covers spyware, firewall you name it all in one little area.
