Any Moonsorrow fans here?

I really dont think Moonsorrow would have any benefit as an oddball, but personally, think they are 10x better than say Amorphis  but obviously arent even close to as well known

in that case, go to HC too!

@Zod;

not a fan of the atmospheric bm eh?

Interesting. I actually wouldn't classify them as such. Regardless, I do like atmospheric BM. And I like Moonsorrow. I just feel that they've been on something of a decline as of late.

To my way of thinking, you have to set out to write a 30 minute song. You don't wind up with a CD with two songs, each 30 minutes in length, by chance. And it seems some what odd and unnatural to use duration as some sort of measuring stick.

I really don't see it as them using it as a measuring stick. It just seems like they write long songs and have been getting more epic on composition. The first track from Havitetty is one of the best they have written IMO, with the second being overshadowed but is still a great song in its own right. The new EP has some amazing stuff on it, with their take on For Whom The Bell Tolls being a HUGE highlight, though i wish the vocals on that song weren't so crappy.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jotunheim. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

I believe he's saying writing long songs for the sake of being long. With that said, if the songs are good, then they're good regardless of length.

That's what I thought he was getting at but I won't say anything until he does, I really dont think Moonsorrow is a pretentious BM band

Do you mean they covered Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls? I've not heard Jotunheim yet, but I'll check it out.

I love Moonsorrow. I heard then the same night my friend introduced me to Turisas. I have Live in Tuska 2003, and it's very good.

I bought Turisas' latest disc + the dvd a couple of weeks ago. It's good stuff, but I wish the freakin' drummer would keep his tongue in his mouth! That drives me nuts to see someone doing that all the time.

Measuring stick for what? I'm not really sure what you're getting at there good sir
My point was, it's unusual to begin the songwriting process and end up with a 30 minute song. It's even more unusual to end up with two, on the same disc. That said, it would seem to be something they set out to do, when they began writing the disc. The only measure of a song should be its quality, not its duration. With each of their last few releases, the songs have gotten longer and longer. At the same time, they've decreased in quality. Based on that, it would seem that the measuring stick they're currently using is duration, not quality.

Of course, I'm sure they believe they're writing quality music. But I think it's pointless to attempt to pen a half hour track. A song should flow naturally, not be forced to fit a framework from the outset.

Yep, they did an awesome cover on their Tulimyrsky EP. Vocals leave something to be desired, but they completely transformed it into a moonsorrow song. Here it is, but I'd still recommend either downloading a higher quality mp3 or checking out the disc since Youtube sucks and loses a lot of nuances, especially for something like moonsorrow. Just don't go into it expecting a straight up metallica cover.

Jotunheim is the 4th track on Verisäkeet. Absolutely beautiful intro and the rest of the song rules too.

I'm all for a band making a cover their own. However, this is one of the worst covers I've ever heard. You'd be hard pressed to find a worse vocal performance anywhere (<-- and I dig Moonsorrow).

That's wild! I agree that they've totally "Moonsorrowed" the song out, but yes, the vocals aren't good. They should've just stuck with the typical vocals, but left the monk esque chants in there. Oh well, overall pretty cool.

I think the music and the song itself is amazing. Again, vocals leave something major to be desired, but for me, they aren't bad enough to ruin the song. I would have rathered them just do the harsh vocals instead of trying to sing though.

Two words: Green Carnation.
Six more: Light of Day, Day of Darkness.
Two more words... Light of Day, Day of Darkness is quite possibly the most overrated disc of the last ten years. OK... that's 18 words. :loco:

I'm not saying it's a bad disc, just vastly, vastly overrated.

No one will ever convince me, that if they broke disc into 10 tracks, it would have received one tenth the amount of praise it received. As always, to each their own. But I much prefer The Quiet Offspring.
