Any Solitude Aeturnus fans here?

I love Solitude Aeturnus!

They always say they hate the production of Downfall, but I think it's my favorite album of theirs... Totally gives me the chills when Phantoms kicks in! Wicked eh!! :headbang:

Through The Darkest Hour is also pretty killer!

Epic Doom!!

Who takes the crown in your opinion? This is a sub genre that I'm just learning about, so that's why I'm asking.

Oh man, that's a tough one!
I would say Candlemass holds the crown.
Simply because they to me are energized traditional doom.
They take the best parts of doom metal and traditional metal.

Don't get me wrong. SA are an AMAZING band.
I certainly wasn't trying to slam b00b in any way.
He was just stating his opinion.

Trouble will always be one of my all time favorites.
Lots fail to acknowledge them, based on their post-Metal Blade years.

If you like rockin' Sabbath type of stuff, then Pentagram are a must as well!

You just reminded me that I STILL haven't gotten around to picking up their newest album. I'll go look for that later on.

NP: Place of Skulls / With Vision

Simple Mind Condition?
Yeah, it's a solid release.
Pretty much what you would expect from TROUBLE nowadays.

Good mix of all their styles.

I lost some interest in them this year with the departure of Eric Wagner and Jeff Olsen.

So far I've lightly gotten into Candlemass. I plan on buying at least a couple of theirs on my way through Knoxville this weekend. I can't seem to be able to put my hands on any Trouble though. I've been wanting to check them out for a while, but with no luck. I'll look into Pentagram as well. Thanks!

I would say that Black Sabbath is the best doom band ever... but that's just my opinion.

Solitude Aeturnus is my second favorite. I saw them on the Crimson Horizon tour and then a few times ten years later. Robert has not lost any of his voice, and sounds great with Candlemass as well.

I think the first two SA discs are classics, and they drop off from there until the latest one, which is good, but not as good as the first two.

Last year, ESCAPI reissued PSALM 9 and THE SKULL with a bonus DVD on each. Best Buy even carried them. Probably shouldn't be too hard to find. I am sure some mail orders still have them. I would recommend starting with these two titles.

For Pentagram, I would recommend starting with the FIRST DAZE HERE collection, which was released by RELAPSE.

For you early Sabbath fans, Saint Vitus are a must!
The low ends might be tough on the ears of the discriminating prog / power metal fan. Some great crushing material there.

Kind of like Candlemass, I think the band DoomSword would appeal to both doom and power metal fans. Amazing band!

I think at one time Laser CD was carrying the Trouble discs, so I'll check there. I've sampled some Saint Vitus and it just sounded a little spacey for my taste.

One of my favorite doom bands is My Dying Bride.

I love My Dying Bride, though they are more in the death/doom vein, as opposed to traditional doom. (Not that there is anything wrong with that).

I have actually recommended MDB as the perfect oddball band for Prog Power, though I know they cost mucho $$$$$$$$$$

If you are looking for more bands in a similar vein to SA and Candlemass:

Memory Garden -- they are a MUST CHECK OUT for you!!!! Mirage is their best, although I still haven't heard the new one yet because it's impossible to get. They are like a more complex Candlemass.

Veni Domine -- particularly the first three discs: Fall Babylon Fall, Material Sanctuary (my favorite), and Spiritual Wasteland. Like a cross between epic (VERY epic!!!) doom and Queensryche.

Memento Mori -- a former side project of Messiah Marcolin (ex-Candlemass) and Mike Wead, which is very similar to Candlemass. Also, some of Mike Wead's other projects (Abstrakt Algebra, Krux, Hexenhaus) have elements in common with this type of music, although they're not necessarily "doom", per se.

Doomshine - Thy Kingdoom Come -- goofy name, but great music.

Last Chapter -- see my earlier comment

Early Tad Morose has a lot in common with these bands, but also contains a large amount of 90s melodic prog metal influence. Sender of Thoughts is one of my favorite discs ever. If you like this stuff, though, definitely also check out Fifth Reason, if you can still find their stuff.

Overall, I would say that the epic/complex doom bands are my second favorite type of metal, after dark power metal (bands like Morgana Lefay, Tad Morose, Brainstorm, and the like).

I'm not quite as huge of a fan of the more stoner-esque or Sabbath-esque doom bands, but I like my share of Pentagram, Trouble, Saint Vitus, Witchfinder General, Confessor, Pagan Altar, Non-Fiction, and Mourn. I really don't enjoy Count Raven, though... they just don't do anything for me. Pentagram, the US doom band, should not be confused with the Turkish dark power metal band of the same name, who are LEAGUES better and more interesting than the US band.

An interesting list, booB. I wasn't familiar with about half of the bands you named. But I'm going to check out a few of them.

Witchfinder General is classic, from their soft-porn album covers to their Sabbath-heavy riffs. Vocals are a little weak. But their riffs are straight from Tony Iommi's playbook. So it balances out. They only have two albums (to my knowledge), the first -- Death Penalty -- was released in 1982. Their second, and last, was Friends of Hell, released in 1983.

I was wrong. According to their entry on Wiki, they just reformed and released their third full-length studio album, titled Resurrected, in August of this year. I didn't know that. Talk about a gap between releases! I'll have to look for that one.

Witchfinder General isn't quite doom, though. They're speedier than Sabbath. And a few slices cheesier. More like Spinal Tap. But worth investigating. Amazon has their CDs. The End has their Live '83 CD. Here's their official web site: Witchfinder General.

Boob, judging from this post, I think our tastes in music is very similar. Veni Domine is a band that I've always wanted to check out, but their stuff is either hard to get or expensive. I'm going to track some down though. I'll check into your recommendations, thanks!:kickass:

If we're making this the doom in general thread, are there any shouts out for the amazing UK band Warning? Those guys rule!
I'm also really big on an old-school band from Finland called Spiritus Mortis. Their second and newest album Fallen is a great listen.

Memory Garden's Carnage Carnivale isn't that hard to get. Check Amazon. You can also get it from the digital stores.

A DOOM METAL THREAD...I love it! Allow me to free-associate on what I've read so far...

Candlemass did a brief US tour this summer, with Rob at the mic...and it was really fucking cool...one of the most enjoyable club shows that I have attended in a long time.

I have been a longtime Candlemass fan...everything they have ever released has been great. I feel the same way about Trouble, although they have 2 phases: (1) pissed off, blugeoning Christian doom metal and (2) semi-psychedelic stoner metal. My clear-cut fave albums from them are Manic Frustration and Simple Mind Condition.

I've seen lots of props for older SA albums...which is great...but anyone that has not checked out their last album titled Alone is truly missing out on a mighty slab of doom. The album is long as shit, full of mighty earthy slabs of doom riffs wrapped around catchy melody lines.

Once again, Boob, our tastes seem to run the same, and I will investigate some of the bands you listed that I am not familiar with...and thanks to Pate for the tips too!

When the weather turns cold, I find myself reaching for doom on those cold gloomy mornings...and yet...it energizes me. My collections primarily consists of Candlemass, Trouble, Cathedral, Trouble, Memory Garden, Momento Mori, and Thunderstorm (haven't seen them mentioned yet...very good!).

Rock on!
