Anybody here over 40 and listen to opeth? I've seen a couple middle agers at the concerts and always wondered if they were there escorting their teenage child or they were a genuine fan? I know I'll be listening at that age \m/

Well - I'll be 44 in a couple of weeks, and tomorrow I'll be seeing Opeth for the fourth time. They are my all-time favorite band, eclipsing Led Zeppelin I first heard BWP a couple of years ago. And about my kids (ages 20 and 18) - they are going to the concert with me tomorrow, but I'm not their escort - they're tagging along because I bought tickets for them. I get my kids into metal - not visa versa. I've turned my daughter onto Dimmu Borgir, Luca Turilli - to name a few. My son listens to most anything, but music definately isn't his life. Both kids truly do like Opeth though.

I've been on a concert kick the past few years, and I have dragged my kids to many of them. I've been into metal since 1969 (1st Led Zeppelin album).

Will you adopt me???

Does almost 40 count? I'm 36 and seeing Opeth tomorrow for the first time. I was way into metal back in the day when Metallica and Slayer were new underground bands. I discovered John Coltrane and Miles Davis soon after and got out of metal for years. Jazz was it... the way... the truth.... A few years ago, a friend played me Destroy Erase Improve by Meshuggah and I had a serious brainshift. I could not believe how far metal had come. I still listen to a fair share of Coltrane, Miles, Masada and other jazz, but also throw a lot of Opeth, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Byzantine, and others into the mix.

I'm not 40 years old but, my friend who listens to opeth got his mother in to them. She likes listening to MAYH. She said it just takes a while to get use to the growles but everything is wonderfull. To get the matter of the subject, she is in her 50's i believe and will be attending the show tomorrow night.

at the show in toronto, i met a chick (she was prolly in her 40) who brought her 2 kids laong with her to the show. they got her into opeth, but she bought tickets for them and herself.
my mom (shes 49) likes damnation
my dad (hes 57) likes some moments off orchid (he hates growling though)
my mom is actually pretty cool with my music, as long as its no growling. she likes a lot of kalmah in-between-verses moments. and she LOVES most of nirvana's and alice in chains' stuff.

Check out the guy on the far right in the third picture from the right (center row)! He definitely is the kind of guy I like seeing at Opeth shows, and I'd guess he's well over 40!

FUN FACT: in the picture on the far right in the third row, novembers doom's new guitarist is the freakishly tall guy with the Novembers Doom hoody. :D

that person with the eye makeup on is just scary. poll- girl or boy?

umm yeah there were quite a few oldies at the philly show (most were found at the bar). there was this one really tall bald, tough looking guy right in front of me in the pit. as soon as you got pushed into him he kept jabbing his elbows out. fucking dick.

Abhorsen...your name rocks my socks...did you get that from the Garth Nix books?

anyway ive seen some older Opeth fans...just gotta look...
metalmancp, where are you from? i saw a guy just like you at the Nevermore/Dimmu Borgir show in SF...an older guy with a daughter...they were both huge metal fans...i thought it was cool!

It's just too bad lots of these moms and dads you mention are turned off by the growls...a vocal style shouldn't be an obstacle. Or maybe I've just grown to like them all in different ways. :)

I'm 43 and I love Opeth. I just saw them for the second time here in Chicago.
I get some strange looks from the younsters which I don't understand. I've been listening to Metal since the early seventies. Saw Black Sabbath back then and have watched the metal scene for all these years. Of course my tastes have changed ( I have a more open mind for all types of music) But I will always love metal!!!!
