Audiophile Crap

Acurus ... there's a name I haven't heard a long time.

but this hi-fi shop ... with a website like that I am not surprised they are out of business.

Dude, I dont think Ive ever been to a hifi shop's website that is crazy. WTF do you want Mr. Net-Tech guru? It's simple and easy to navigate. :loco:

The most amazing stores have shitty websites too...something I have noticed.

That's actually one of the nicer hi-fi shop websites I've seen, they really do usually look like they were designed in 1998.

Ken ... annoying you some more

this ... $399 at Audio Advisor but needs a phono preamp for $100 more

OR this ... about $280 everywhere .... Erik's rig game the idea about Yamaha ... their old stereo gear was fantastic ... not sure about the newer stuff. Even had a phono input ... and just spotted one for $243 shipped on ebay.

Are you planning on playing vinyl? I didn't know you had a TT.

Do you listen to the radio much? iPod much? If so, the yamaha i guess. But I bet the CA sounds better.

edit: actually, just noticed you can dock an iPod onto the CA too.

actually to the one set of ears on this site ... http://www.whathifi.com/search/apac...s=tid:367 type:hcmproduct fs_cck_field_price:[251%20TO%20500]&solrsort=created%20desc&retain-filters=1
the Yamaha wins over the Cambridge ... although with their Integrated Amp ... I forgot the top one is Receiver which i don't need ... although i just found another to throw in the mix as the bargain wonder HK 3490 ... around $300 ...

and yes would be wanting to get a turntable at some point. I do have still a crate full of records.

my experience is that the yamaha "natural sound" line sounds totally A-OK for the money, though it's hardly "AUDIOPHILE CRAP" either. mine has a neat switch for true-bypassing the entire EQ stack though, which i guess is a nod to audiophilia. to be honest it is probably on par with denon or the cheaper cambridge audio/rotel/nad lines, but i base that on little other than gut feeling. also, it's heavy as shit, and one thing i learned in audio engineering college is the heavier an amp is, the better it sounds (there are actual physical laws that dictate this shit. i do not remember them.)

quality is so-so. i had an 80's yamaha natural sound amp where something died, i think one of the channels went silent all of a sudden. on my current one, the input selector pot easily gets scratchy as hell and i have to drown it in contact cleaner. and the motor on the volume knob died so now i can't use the remote to change the volume (which i NEVER did anyway!)

but yeah, not sure about the newer stuff either, i think mine is late 90's or early 00's

I had Yamaha gear in the past as well and it was pretty great.
This new one looks pretty slick for the money ... if you hit that "pure direct" switch on it it even cuts out the display for less interference ... nice little touches like that.

one thing with Yamaha is they tend to be a bit bright so matching the right speaker is crucial.

and Ken, would love that Rotel rig but can't swing that now money wise ... besides just realized that there is no treble or bass on the amp ... i need that sort of stuff for my old ears.
