I was wondering if anyone could give me names of some bands that are in the same vein as Opeth. I love melodic death metal.

JUJ, the Norwegian project featuring SUSPERIA vocalist Athera and DEAD TROOPER members Are and Birger, have made available for download a demo track entitled "Too Late" at this location. The band, whose sound is said to be similar to that of OPETH and MY DYING BRIDE, are looking for a record deal.

you must check out a band called Vidres A La Sang on Xtreem Records from Spain.. they are an incredible band in a similar vein, doing the whole epic melodic death type thing.. my review of their new album is here:-

Every band I've heard described as 'like Opeth' has always been dissapointing. Most of that is the greatness of Opeth, so I've given up trying to find another one of them. Instead I'd check out bands that, like them, think on a different plane, although are in different styles. Arcturus, Agalloch, Ulver (keep an open mind), Solefald (1st or 4th album), Enslaved (check out 'neogenesis' off their new album), and particularly check out a new band on The End records called Subterranean Masquerade (most similar musically to Opeth of these, but lighter and more 'avante garde' for lack of better terminology).

Everyone whos searching for bands like Opeth should defintitly check out DISILLUSION.
I've never heard such an amzing debut the last couple of years.
Back to Times of Splendor is a timeless masterpiece of Prog Death Metal
