Bands You've Come To Like After Seeing Them Live

Glad to see you enjoyed 3. 3 got great exposure with that tour and by touring with Porcupine Tree. I've been a huge fan of theirs for years and attend basically any show of theirs I can.

These guys were great live. They put on an excellent show when I saw them opening for porcupine tree in cincinnati. What you heard live is what you heard on the cd, and when he played that acoustic guitar he bloody played the acoustic guitar. Only complaint was that I didn't wear earplugs and was in the front row... my first time at that kind of venue and the pa fooled me like no other. i almost wanted to leave and skip pt, but I pulled through. Now wearing ear plugs for concerts, hell even got them in now cause of my loud as hell brother downstairs.

Although, they have slipped under my radar because they were at the top of my default playlist for so long and thats just a trend for any artist at the top of my playlist.

Between the Buried and Me.

Saw them at the first progressive nation tour and they rocked me live. I still enjoy their live show much mroe than the albums I've bought since.

I'm way different. I saw them for the first time at Ozzfest and hated them. Though, to be perfectly honest, it was a time where I hated any band with growly/screaming vocals. Yes, I know how ironic that is considering the show I was at but give me a break, it was my first show and was there for Black Sabbath and Black Sabbath alone.

Anyways, I've seen them two other times, both after I had gotten into their discography. Once at Prognation and the other on their last headline tour. While by no means do I think they're a bad live band, they're just sort of meh for me. However, on disc they have done some remarkable things.

Yep, and SAINT VITUS sucks?????????? :guh:

LMAO, that was a total joke Jasonic! Culture Club lol. I wish Boy George would sing for Saint Vitus so they wouldn't be so damned doomy! They need some happiness. A Boy George tube steak would cheer 'em all up and they could be more happy like Candlemass or Trouble or something

Circus Maximus and Seventh Wonder - 2 of my most favorite bands I hadn't really heard of until I saw them at ProgPower; fan for life :)

Diablo Swing Orchestra - heard their Butcher's Ballroom before PP and just wasn't into it.. then saw them live and I now luv 'em. And I cannot WAIT for their new one

Kamelot - I had FL and liked it but after seeing them live, I bought everything they had done the day after the show...

I saw OSI live once! They rocked my ass of! They rule. Hope that they and Fates warning soon will make some new albums!! Love them!

PPUSA bands -

DGM - Simone is a top five guitarist to ever set foot on stage at PPUSA and that is saying a bunch.
Brainstorm - What an awesome live band !! Many of ther releases may be uneven, but there are monster songs on each.
Balance of Power - My favorite band that Lance has sang for.
Cage - They kicked ass !! Quality band !!
Halcyon Way - though I became a fan after watching them in a club in the entertainment capitol of the world..... Columbus Ga. !!
DC Cooper - What a great voice !!

Non PPUSA bands

Slaughter - Mark Slaughter is one of the best live singers I have EVER heard live !! He was incredible ....... and this was circa 1999, not 1986.
Savatage - they were playing with thrash bands and I was a thrasher "in the day." They were awesome !!
Kiss - was never a big fan of the "classic" stuff. Saw them without a big stage show and make-up in the 80's, but Paul Stanley was a magical frontman.
Heart - I was somewhat of a fan, but Ann Wilson live was incredible. I don't know if I have ever heard a better live vocalist and Howard Leese (this was late 80's) was a much more technical guitarist than appeared on disc.
Death Angel - Great thrash band. Super tight musicianship. They were kids when I saw them, but they were extremely professional.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - (circa 20002) Hey.... I am from Alabama, so I liked them ok, but much preferred Blackfoot or 38 Special. They were really great live though.
Jackal (Atlanta Ga. one, not European one) - I knew and liked one song, but they were one of the most entertaining live bands ever. When your lead singer can play lead chainsaw..... that is cool !! The lead singer also hits all of those rough high notes, spot on. Better musicians than given credit.
Lizzy Borden - that guy can sing. Really good band !!

Pulled from my 2010 concert stats.

13 of the albums I bought in 2010 (29% of my total) were my first album from bands I had just seen live. Those bands:

American Draft
Black Mountain
Cheer-Accident
Fang Island
Karnivool
MONO
NoMeansNo
Red Baraat
Sioum
Tortoise
U.S. Christmas
Vestiges
Yakuza

Live performance is probably the main tool I use these days to figure out what bands to take an interest in.

and this is a statement he is 83% sure of.

I am a big Forbidden fan and I didnt like the new disc at all but after seeing them play the material live the songs came across way better than on disc. Very rare for that to happen for me. It is great when band can do that in a live setting. Now I have gone back and listened to the new disc a few more times because of seeing them play it live.

Oceans of Sadness.

Hadn't heard of them before the PPXI announcement. Mid summer I picked up Arrogance of Ignorance and thought it was pretty good, but it was in rotation with a lots of new stuff to get ready for the festival. Loved the energy and musicianship of their performance! Now I listen to them all the time. Only have Arrogance and Mirror Palace so far, haven't been able to find their older stuff on CD yet.

Another is Sonata Arctica, first head them opening for Nightwish and was really impressed. Now have all their studio releases and saw them headline last year. They played a total dump in Portland (80s punk place that reopened briefly in the 2000s and has since closed again). Tony totally cracked up the crowd by stating "this is cute, I think it's smaller than our rehearsal space".

Hammerfall comes to mind as well. Had heard of them for years but never got into their stuff. After their kick ass show at PPXI I've been picking up their back catalog and totally loving it.

Totally agree.. Another killer live singer - Mike Matijevic.. Hell Steelheart for that matter. They were phenominal live...
Jackyl (Atlanta Ga. one, not European one) - I knew and liked one song, but they were one of the most entertaining live bands ever. When your lead singer can play lead chainsaw..... that is cool !! The lead singer also hits all of those rough high notes, spot on. Better musicians than given credit.

I've seen Jackyl a couple times - the first time they were freakin' phenominal. My brother when with me and he wasn't into the music but they put on such a great show he had a blast. (Jackyl was written into the top of a barstool with chainsaw - awesome)

The second time I saw them was a disappointment. Maybe it was an off night for them, but the crowd sucked too...
