Yes and No. If i'm tracking myself then yes. I prefer to get everything tight first time. If doing someone else and they suck/time constraints, then yes.

I'd say cause drummers define the feel and groove of the song more. Getting the other members tight with the drummer gives a far better song than drums tracked afterwards...

So it isn't law to record drums first? I mean I see your point but I recorded this band where the drummer just plain sucked: like going from 130bpm to 150 by the end of the song kind of shit.

Hahaha, well, on my band's latest EP, we recorded to DKFH superior tracks, did everything in my home studio then went to a studio to do drums...


So no, there are no laws...


What was interesting is the studio sucked and i ended up triggering DKFH off the drummer's performance anyway so...

If you can't track the drums first, at least use a click track. I'm producing a band now, and the drummer had a broken arm. I tracked all the guitars to a click, and we're tracking the drums now. I will put the bass on after the drums. It's assbackwards, but it's working out this time. Definately start with a click.

Aye, or even just make a BASIC drum track with DKFH or BFD or whatever there is as i've always found i play tighter to a drumtrack than a click...

See that is more the general method for even myself, it's what I perfere but if drums are supposed to go first then I guess they go first. I practice with a metronome so it's not an issue, actually really never has been.

Question: If you play dead on with a click track and don't deviate from the tempo at all then is having all the drum on/off messages quantized a good thing? Or a bad thing as it isn't realistic.

Man, I've never really quantized anything. Don't know how, I guess. I usually just play the drum tracks with my hands, I actually hate the thought of quantizing, come to think of it. I say EVIL!
