one thing that has always intrigued me is what did u use to listen before u discovered "metal"?...it could be a very funny thing to hear, and some may be ashamed of saying it, but C´MON! everybody starts at the bottom...personally...i used to listen to queen, air supply :ill:, and folk music from my country (not that they're the "bottom" but i prefer metal 1000 times! more) until IRON MAIDEN'S "POWERSLAVE" album came to my hands, and my life changed. what about you?...

I listened to rock, like U2, Queen, Beatles, Led Zep before discovering metal. I still listen to them, and I do think that those bands are better than most metal bands. I never really got into the rut that most metal fans got into, where they listen to metal and nothing else.

that's very true...as a musician, u always have to expand your musical knowledge, that's why besides metal i love to listen to classical music, prog rock like yes, rush or ELP, and i still listen to folk, and i love to mix 'em together when i compose, coz that´s what the influences are all about...

I was way into alternative and pop rock kinda stuff like Bush, Pearl Jam, REM, Tonic, but I was way obsessed with Collective Soul. Just as obsessed as I am now with SymX. I will also come out and admit to you all that I enjoyed Ace of Base and the Macerana. :zombie: Good ol' Metallica changed all that :D

I'm pretty much in the metal rut now.. actually..the SyX rut, where even though i expand to other bands briefly when i've heard SyX too much, but i always very quickly go back.

I was into the grunge rock thing in my late teens, Pearl Jam and Bush were my two favorites, with a little Nirvana in there, then I went into the Godsmack, Disturbed, Creed, Staind thing in my early 20's, but with still listening to a little of the sabbath, old metallica, pantera, tool etc etc. oh and i was big on marylin manson for a couple of years.. (I'm only 23 so it wasnt that long ago)..until SyX changed me into the 'only-metal' thing, or the only prog/power thing really..
who knows what comes next after here

My first music was Puff the Magic Dragon and the theme from The Dukes OF Hazard at the age of four.
:D

From there, starting at the age of 12, I got engrossed in Kiss. So, I guess I kinda started in metal, of sorts anyways. But one thing is for sure, I have never been strictly into metal. I have been told that I have one of the most eclectic tastes in music they'd ever seen, but I don't know about that.

I enjoy classical, baroque, opera, jazz(mostly smooth, but plenty of classic form) techno(jungle mostly, but some house and the like), world(Indian, and similar modes), a little bluegrass(NO country), classic rock, prog rock, prog metal(\m/), Spanish flamenco, Spanish classical, hip-hop(NO mainstream rap), funk, older R&B, some alternative;mostly the most different like Tom Waits, Bjork, The Cranes, Primus(older), Regge, and some pop, new and old.

Before I got into metal I was listening to 70s prog stuff like yes, Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd (David Gilmour was my first really big influence as a guitarist, tho you might not be able to tell that now ;)). I know its kinda weird for a younger kid to be into prog, but thats what my dad listened to a lot. I got into metal through Dream Theater, believe it or not. I think the first powermetal band I got into was either Angra or Stratovarius. Im much more into the "metal" side of things now than the prog side, but I still enjoy really good and unique prog bands (Pain of Salvation being my favorite).

I was/am a fan of alternative music. Although I don't like any of these contemporary alternative bands that sound like everything I've heard before. Amongs my favorite bands were/are Silverchair, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Blind Melon, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Rage Against The Machine and Bush, just to mention a few.

Fifth grade...

The Offspring, all the way until late eight grade, when I got into *cough*LinkinPark*cough*...

My nu-metal stage lasted until midsummer before freshman year. That's when I really started to get into Led Zeppelin. I was listening to them a lot for a while, then my friend turned me on to Tool. I was a big Tool fan through the summer until August of last year...

That's when my life changed forever. Thank you, The Glass Prison...

After my pure Dream Theater stage that lasted a few months (I still listen to them a lot), I expanded my metal horizens and got into Symphony X, Angra, Opeth, Iced Earth, and Iron Maiden. I also listen to some insane stuff once in a while, mostly The Berzerker...

And, here I am...

I was always into Prog Rock, i.e Kansas, Renaissance, Genesis, etc. but my passion was Canadian folkies like Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Loreena Mckennitt, etc. I still listen to this type of music quite often, but my main interest is Prog Metal, thanks to Symphony X.

This is an interesting thread.

When I was 9 i was the biggest "silverchair" fan. I still have all there singles and albums (even a stupid interview disk) I was gonna sell it but i thought I could get alot of money from it on ebay when I'm older.
