Best Cabs / Speakers for Recording

The cab doesnt matter much as long as it is built well in my opinion. The speaker is the important thing and the Celestion V30 definately rocks! It is too brittle and harsh sounding in the room for my taste but on tape it sounds unmatched. It did not find a speaker yet that records better....

I'm thinking of buying a framus cobra cab 4x12 with greenbacks.
How does the greenbacks work out for heavier stuff???

Yes but if we talk about well built cabs the difference when close micing between say a traditional Recto Mesa 4x12, a traditional Recto Mesa 2x12 and the Engl 4x12 with V30's is way more subtle than the difference between different speaker types.

a v30 loaded marshall and mesa cab are going to sound very different, then if you get into front loaded cabs like vht or framus you've got a pretty drastic difference once again
a lot of guys seem to like the framus dragon cabs better than the cobra cabs, i've not really tried either so i don't know for sure...i've got a splawn 4x12 and a modded marshall 4x12 (gt75/eminence governer x pattern, real plywood back, metal handles, heavier internal wiring) that i'm very satisfied with
No doubt about it. I never denied that fact. Just wanted to stress that the choice of speakers is the most important decision to make here. Sure the cabs sound all a little different....

I've heard the greenback has tighter bass and recto has a more flobby one.

I think it really depends on the amp your using, and the type of music... personally i don't like vintage 30's with 5150's as much as the g12t75 celestions... But with my TSL the 75's are to bright and the 30's and greenbacks are a nice mix ... You can't really go wrong with a good celestion speaker and good mike placement and playing..

Marshall Park speakers are teh bestest.
Actually if you kick the speakers and badly dent them they are as good as recording off-axis for those lazy enough to want an off axis sound from micing on-axis.

FWIW i think a good 4x12 with an x pattern like two vintage 30's and two gt75's (or something like a governer/manowar setup if you're an eminence person like me) is an excellent choice for recording...you have the option of miking either speaker, or one of each
i have a splawn straight 4x12, and a splawn modded marshall 1960a 4x12 set up like that...i really love how they sound live, and i can always find a nice tone when recording with em

I like the Marshall 1960A sound when coupled with a Rectifier or Fire/Powerball. It really depends what sound you're after though.
