Best of 2014 round up.

I clearly don't listen to as much new music as most of you. So, I'd struggle to even put out a proper top 10. But here it goes, in no particular order :

Belphegor - Conjuring the Dead
Iced Earth - Plagues of Babylon
Gamma Ray - Empire of the Undead
Arch Enemy - War Eternal (yes, fuck you guys)
Behemoth – The Satanist
Decapitated - Blood Mantra
Primordial - Where Greater Men Have Fallen

Disappointments :
Opeth - Pale Communion
Bloodbath - Grand Morbid Funeral
Cannibal Corpse - A Skeletal Domain
Judas Priest - Redeemer of Souls (I don't even know if the songs are good. The production is horrid.)

Cheat list :
The Crown : Deathrace King
The Crown : Crowned in Terror

Edit : The new Witherscape EP will probably make it somewhere in the list as well.

Disappointments :

Cannibal Corpse - A Skeletal Domain

protip: just skip Barrett's songs and you're left with pure quality!

From only knowing their name and having seen this cover art, I am assuming their lyrics are about porn. Am I wrong? :)

If the lyrics are about porn, they're about some terrifying porn. A few choice song titles: "Replacement Addiction", "Rape Kit", "Split Urethra Castle"

Disappointments :
Cannibal Corpse - A Skeletal Domain

Since becoming a fan, I've found C.C.'s releases so consistent in quality that I have a difficult time rating them. It's meant that I'm never really disappointed and, conversely, rarely surprised.

If you don't mind delving into detail, what didn't you like about it and what set it apart from other post-Barnes C.C. albums?

I had forgotten about track names and my opinion about individual songs. So, I gave it another spin today. I only really liked 3 tracks... "Headlong into Carnage", "The Murderer's Pact" and "Bloodstained Cement".

I don't think this is essentially much better or worse than the other corpsegrinder albums. Just that it had a lot of hype surrounding it (people here and my other real-life friends) and for me, it failed to live up to it. Pretty generic, uninspired death metal, IMO. Just not my type of death metal band, I guess.

^Cannibal corpse is pretty generic and straight-forward, though. At least if you judge by today's standards. They gained popularity because they were special back in the early 90's - I'm certain that if an unknown band had released A Skeletal Domain today, it wouldn't be noticed very much. Regardless, I still think Cannibal Corpse rules :kickass:

Nah that quality of musicianship, songwriting and production would definetly get noticed on any level. And yes Cannibal were popular in the 90s with the gore stuff but they are more popular today than they have ever been. They have gone from being "that gore band" to become the biggest death metal band in the world and you do not get there by making music that would not get noticed very much. Like you said they fucking rule! :kickass:

Well, I wouldn't know about that, to be honest. The first time I listened to a Cannibal Corpse album was around 2008 and while I don't dislike them, there's very little material that I actually like. To each his own, obviously. :)

Webster is a music theory freak, his death metal ideas are awesome and pretty unique if you ask me. Patt O'Brien is a riff maniac too, the only mediocrish link is probably Paul, the drummer.

Talking about Witherscape, what really grinds my gears is:
BUY CD FOR 5 NEWS SONGS
BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE
BUY VINYL FOR ADDITIONAL 2 SONGS
BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE
BUY EXCLUSIVE DIGITAL RELEASE TO GET EVEN MORE SONGS

Bitch, i just want to buy CD and have everything if possible. Vinyls are nice, but so far i cant play them in my car

Totally understandable, thanks for clarifying.

That said, I still enjoy the hell out of Cannibal Corpse and all this conversation has done has made me want to put A Skeletal Domain on again because...

Regardless, I still think Cannibal Corpse rules :kickass:

Like you said they fucking rule! :kickass:

Cannibal Corpse is good at writing Cannibal Corpse songs. Unfortunately those songs rarely do much for me, there are usually 1 or 2 songs per album that I enjoy enough to listen to more than a couple times. Although Pounded into Dust is eternally on my workout or "want to destroy the world" playlists. That song makes me want to unleash the fury
