Ghost Reveries hasn't been out long enough for me to truly give it a ranking. But, at this moment in time, it is my second favorite Opeth album, with Blackwater Park (my #1 favorite album by any band) being my favorite.

What GR has going for it:
Ghost of Perdition has eclipsed The Drapery Falls as my favorite Opeth song. In fact, GoP in my favorite song, period.
The album flows quite well.
Well produced, as I admittedly have enjoyed Opeth's production from BWP forward. My ears tend to like well produced sound better.
What GR doesn't have going for it:
[empty list]
I don't have the negativity towards The Grand Conjuration as many others have. In fact, it's probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite song off the album.

I do not analyze music well, thus, it's hard for me to discuss the merits of the album technically. I feel it is as genious as any other Opeth album. I don't feel they've "sold out", nor do I feel they've entirely changed their direction. They just continue to grow over time.

That being said, as with all Opeth albums, time will tell. Even as an experienced Opeth listener, each album has taken time for me to digest and understand, and GR is no different.

Cool, some love for Still Life. That was the first Opeth album I bought when it was actually released...I had to get it off the internet because I couldn't find it in any US stores. Still my favorite.

People need to stop bashing Deliverance, and I havn't been up to date on the forums, so I hope not too many people are bashing Ghost Reveries. EVERY OPETH ALBUM IS GOOD IN IT'S OWN WAY. The only reason most people don't like a certain one is because it doesn't 'fit in' with THEIR idea of Opeth.

Let musicians do what they want, and congradulate them for having the balls to do something new.

Holy crap MetalMan, I definitely agree on your thoughts of Ghost of Perdition. It is still difficult to say whether or not it's my favourite song, but dammit, I'll say it is alongside my favourite songs The Moor, Godhead's Lament and April Ethereal, no doubt about it. The song flows so well - it is fucking perfect!

In fact, I have not been so impressed with a song since I first heard The Moor back in the day.

I think in time, what will happen, is like with Still Life becoming my #1 fave album from opeth, Ghost Reveries will end up eclipsing it. Who knows!? There are TOO many fine moments found here.

^ Hey, well said there, Caesar Metallius.

Deliverance rules. As does Damnation.

Most people want the same album over and over. That's why fucking Slayer is so popular. It's also why they are so boring. Like I said, Still Life is my favorite Opeth album, but I don't want them to put out a copy of it.

MAYH. Not even close.

EDIT: BUT

I don't know why there aren't more votes for Blackwater Park. The album is fucking solid, damn sure close to as solid as Still Life. Blackwater Park is one of their top 3 songs, easily.

What you just said about morningrise is what I think about still life. That damn SL album just seems boring and uninspired compared to all of the others. Some of the riffs are just plain irritating and go on too long (white cluster beginning part between the growls, moonlapse vertigo, the riff at the end right before "I turn away".) Plus benighted sounds like complete Bullcrap.. maybe the most boring song ever. It isn't as good as their others. I love morningrise but I respect your individual opinion. About moringrise yes it wanders a lot, I can see how you can get irritated by it. That is a weakness and sign of immature songwriting. But some of the parts on that album are just spectacular, especially the acustic parts. Peace.

Wow... SL is boring and uninspired? You need to get your ears checked man.

My favorite is Blackwater park, with MAYH as a close second and Still Life as third.

Though I noticed it's considered "cool" on this forum to bash Blackwater Park and Deliverance, while praising the everloving crap out of Ghost Reveries. I attribute the high ranking of GR on this poll mostly to 1) new fans who haven't heard all of Opeth's music, and 2) the fact that the album has only been out a few weeks and this is currently what people are listening to so they're all hyped up about it. Let's do this poll next year and see what the results are. LOL

WHAT THE FUCK is that HORRIBLE Opeth Hot Topics Ad?! "Best band since Slipknot"?!? WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF TRENDY GARBAGE IS THIS?! I should have expected some atrocity like this from Roadrunner Records, the fags! Shit, I remember when Opeth was underground and people that liked them usually liked other death metal! What the fuck is next? Opeth opening for Fear Factory and Slipknot on the "wear baggy pants, get purple dreadlocks, and get your eyebrow pierced" tour?!

Oh my glog!

woah, hold on there for a sec - it's not what you think. I believe the dude that has that as his sig is "created" by him. There's no official ad such as that (and THANK GOD!)

I'm sure it's done for good laughs and chuckles....honestly, it's NOT funny because in all pure honesty, Opeth is nowhere even close to sounding like Slipknot.

Anyway, hope that chills you out.
