I consider selling out not to be "making music to make money", but to radically change your style and reduce the quality of your work in order to mass produce it for the masses, rather than continuing to produce music of a similar vein (perhaps of lesser/equal/greater quality, which is irrelevant) and continuing to receive money from your fans.

Also, people who were fans of these bands before they "sold out" are predisposed to take any change in sound as EVIL and CHANING TO PLAY INTO THE HANDS OF THE MASSES. So fuckin dumb. And even if they DID completely change their style to make money and appeal to the masses, you know what? Get over it. They're people. They make their own choices. Some day they might regret their choices. Who knows?
