Blackwater Park

Nice review of a great album. Some real standouts like "The Leper Affinity" and "Blackwater Park", but this album has never been my favorite Opeth album, Damnation being the only other to share that fate. The other five have all been my favorite at times, but trying to pick a favorite Opeth album or even rank them is about the most pointless activity ever as it's always changing. All of them are great but My Arms, Your Hearse has been my favorite lately.

Ok i dislike Opeth in general, but a comment not about the music itself:
"When AT THE GATES set the Metal world on its collective ear with “Slaughter of the Soul”, they spawned an entire generation of bands that followed their freshly blazed trail. So, where are all the OPETH clones? Why is it I don’t read about this band or that band being heavily influenced by OPETH? Strangely, it reminds me of an old Elvis Presley joke:
Q: Why don’t Elvis impersonators impersonate the young Elvis?
A: Because they can’t.
The same seems to hold true of the mighty OPETH. There’s a reason that no one has followed in their footsteps… because no one can."
You know there is always the possibility that no one WANTED to follow Opeth's footsteps or that Opeth are not THAT GOOD in order to have a spawn of band as followers. This is the proper thinking of a non-Opeth fan in general (not someone who hates Opeth like me, someone who just doesnt care about them), me thinks. There are other bands playing this kind of "really melodic 50% death metal with progressive 70s influences", who are not in the vein of Opeth. Also the influence that a band breeds to others is a credit, not the non-influence (and possibly the lack of interest by other metal bands about what Opeth play).

"Not reading about Opeth clones or bands being heavily influences by Opeth" may just mean that Opeth are not that important, because if they were, they would have an impact. Thats the standard. All GREAT bands influenced others.

No.

The outro solo to The Leper Affinity is one of my all time favorites, and Bleak is one of my favorite songs ever done. Like all Opeth, Blackwater Park wears a bit toward the end, but it's still pretty cool. Dig the review, nicely done.

Well, I suppose we disagree on how good Opeth are. That's cool. But I think you'd have to admit, they are quite popular. You might even say that they are extremely popular, given what it is they do. And given that popularity, I'm surprised that there aren't more bands borrowing from them. But hey, different strokes/different folks.

Wells, you could say Novembre, Lilitu, and April Ethereal "borrow" from Opeth, and I'm sure there are more. Thing is, people like to think Opeth are this entirely original band, yet they are more or less a 70's prog band with metal riffs and death vocals. Hell, even the band will tell you that.

As for BWP, I still think the title track is a great, great song. It's too bad the rest of the album is mediocre dross. I mean c'mon, Dirge for November is simply dreadful.

The thing is that if bands borrowed from them that would be a credit, not the opposite
I guess we'll agree to disagree. As J. pointed out, there are bands that borrow from them. My point was, I'm surprised there aren't more. And while I'd agree that Opeth isn't 100% original, they are one of those bands, that when you hear them, you know it's them. To my ear, they're one of the most distinctive sounding bands in Metal. And typically, when bands are both distinctive and successful, it lends itself to bands following in their footsteps.

Haha, oh yeah! That one real obvious one in... Master's Apprentice I think, I always thought "man, that is just SHAMELESS Morbid Angel worship" and in an interview around that time Mikael fully admitted to ripping them off for that riff. :Spin:

Good review. Bad album.
I'll have to third this

I found it interesting reading, in that the things our man loves are near enough the exact same things I can't stand about it. The...errrm....errrrm...oh, fuck it, I can't remember what he said but I'm sure he liked what I considered to be just dragging on and boring. And the seamlessly interwoven death/prog/acoustic passages, just seemed to me like acoustic intro-death-mellow-death-mellow...

Really, Erik? To be honest, I can't stand Still Life. Wait, let me rephrase: I find Still Life to be a boring album. It's not horrible like BWP, but it's just coma-inducing.

Orchid is their masterpiece, in my eyes.
