Blackwater Park

Albums can be looked upon as footnotes to corresponding live performances. Twenty years from now, it is the live performances that will be remembered, just as we look back today and remember Hendrix, Floyd, Zeppelin, and The Beatles etc for their ability to play live.

An example: for those who don't like listening to "Deliverance" on a CD player, or from MP3 download, I cannot imagine they've seen it played live. It makes no sense to me that someone can like bits and pieces of Opeth, but not be completely floored when they stand in front of 2x1000 megawatt speakers watching Opeth play "Deliverance".

Just out of curiosity, do you dislike "Blackwater Park" or Opeth in general?

Just BWP...I haven't listened to any other Opeth so I can't judge. Just about every album of theirs has been recommended to me, and I'm VERY apprehensive about getting another one because (a) other people are full of shit and (b) if it ends up boring me like BWP, I'll be gutted.

Should be getting broadband soon, so piracy will be the inevitable option :heh:

Oh really!? OK that explains it, because to me, not including Damnation, my least favourite Opeth album would get a 7.5 or 8.
That's about how I feel. If I compared Opeth discs against each other, than I would have rated Blackwater Park lower. But I was rating it against all the music that I listen to.

I agree with your other comments as well. Although there seems to be a change between Morningrise and MAYH and between Still Life and Blackwater Park, it's all still very distinctly Opeth.

I know, eh? I used to worship these guys, but now that I almost never listen to them anymore, and get bored whenever I try (excluding Orchid). I do have a lot of great memories of seeing them live in February! Sure, no stage presence other than a lot of headbanging, but who cares? The Deliverance songs come off a lot better live, and I thought "The Moor" was actually kinda boring in a live setting.

And guys, WTH? ORCHID >>>>>>>>>>>>> MORNINGRISE!

I think the divide between earlier and later Opeth, which have significant differences but are not dissimilar enough to cause a loss of identity, is that many feel they've diluted their sound. I can't completely agree with that view, Still Life is my favorite Opeth album, but they have definitely simplified things...

And live Opeth is a whole different matter...even questionable bits like the Morbid Angel steal mentioned earlier were absolutely crushing when I saw them...
