Blu-Ray or HD-DVD

Yes, but how many of these movies are unavailable for rent?

Zod

Not sure about NetFlix etc but I'm fairly certain my local Blockbuster wouldn't have 80% of the films I own: european cut of Dawn of the Dead, Ichi the Killer, original Dark Water, Blue Underground release of Zombi 2, any of the Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento directors cuts, Cannibal Apocalypse, the Criterion Collection, Studio Ghibli.

Also, renting only allows me to watch films once or twice. Some of my favorite movies I've probably seen more than 15 times.

:loco: those are always good ones

Wait, there's obviously a huge gap here. You're suggesting that only mainstream movies released at the theater are any good? What about independent films, foreign movies, cult movies, re-released stuff, etc? I normally cannot stand big budget movies.

...but that was back in the 90s when I could pick up a used VHS copy for $5 - not a $30 Blu-Ray that requires a $500 Blu-Ray player and a $2000 1080p HDTV just to view it.

Well, I don't own a HD format so I've stopped buying DVDs until the war is settled. That said, most of my regular DVDs are bought from eBay or collectors outlets. Also, if I did ever buy some hollywood drivel, I'd buy it used from Blockbuster. Not sure if you realize this but to rent a film from Blockbuster costs $4.75. To buy it used from Blockbuster costs $6.50. At that price, I normally just buy them so I can take my time watching them. I can't count how many times I've rented a DVD and returned it without watching it.

Renting is valid, however. My library is great since I can get all of The Criterion Collection from my local: Seventh Seal, Hidden Fortress, Silence of the Lambs, Man who fell to Earth, and what not. And of course, the library for all my $12K per year in county taxes is free.

Netflix, my friend. I boycott Blockbuster because of their shady business practices and laughable selection. You should too.

Yeah, I barely ever rent (or buy) films anymore. I watch maybe 5 new movies per year -- I'm so out of touch with new films that by the time they hit HBO, they're new for me. :D

But even then, renting is only temporary, right? What about all the stuff you want to keep? I mean I suppose that's the point -- people want to buy and keep films forever in their collection, so renting is totally worthless.

Circuit City just sent me an email with $150 HD-DVD players ... they must know something

I got my Sharp DVD player from Circuit City FOR FREE when I bought my cellphone there. They do the best deals. EDIT: this was 4 years ago before HD was even a glint in our eye.

Neither store has comissioned sales people so you shouldn't get any pressure in either.

I do like Circuit for deals better than Best Buy ... but Best Buy definetly has a better selection and better looking stores

Yeah, I do dislike how bad Circuit City looks. Despite that, perhaps I'd go there for the deals if I didn't feel so weird in there. I don't know if it's that I hate being the only person in there without a Circuit City shirt on, or if it's because I feel like I'm in some zombie flick about to happen or what, but either way I hate how many employees they have in those stores. I also can't concentrate because I'm constantly thinking "How the fuck do they stay in business with this ratio of employees to customers? This defies logic!"

Best Buy can eat a dick. Pushiest floor personnel of them all, and they always try about 10 times to get you to purchase their extended warranties on everything.

And those extended warranties SUCK! I bought a vacuum cleaner from them once and they told me the extended warranty would cover everything blah blah. Of course, the fine print then confirms that they have to attempt to fix it 3 times before they can replace it with a new one. That's me driving back and forth every few weeks to keep getting the fucker fixed. When they decided it couldn't be fixed, they decided I could swap it out for a new one at the same price. However, the model was about 4 years old and nothing in the store was comparable aka much more expensive. So I had to pick a new one and pay extra to make up the difference.

Fuck Best Buy.

Absolutely love Best Buy. Knowledgeable sales staff, good prices... and a FANTASTIC return policy. Bought a hard drive in early November. It seems to be a bit flaky, so I called to find out what their return policy is. Since it falls under their Xmass policy, it can be brought back until January 25th. Giving the customer 3 months to return something, is beyond generous.

I bought an XBOX360 there in December '06. Sold it to a friend 9 months later. It broke. He asked if I bought the warranty. I did. Brought it back to Best Buy. Not only did they say, "OK, go grab a new one off the floor", with NO QUESTIONS asked, they also refunded me $53, because when I bought it they were selling for $400 and they're now $350.

Best Buy rules!

Maybe it differs from store to store. The Best Buy in the Palisades Mall won't even allow you to switch out one DVD for another. You can only swap it out for the same one you bought. I bought a DVD for someone as a gift, turns out they already have it, so I went to swap it out.....no way jose.
