He's actually right.
Look at say Paradise Lost 'Icon' which has pop like song structure, is repetitive,stripped down rythmn,etc.. but you factor in the second guitar doing all the harmonies,solos, plus you have drum work,etc... The album is complex having tons of depth being intetesting but is repetitive. It does not mean it's minimalistic because the songs are repetitive themselves.
You can repeat some basic rythmn for 3,4 minutes while doing other things in a song to make it have a lot of depth not being basic anymore. Include other great things in the music that is more noticible than the basic foundation of the repeating parts.
Something is minimalistic and repititive at the sametime only if the musicians are not attempting to play,try,create, put it together. You have layering,harmonizing,solos,etc...
You can have a song with 2,3 basic rythmn parts for a foundation, repeat those parts adding different sounds,textures, other instruments over the basic rythmn as an abtraction to take away from that it self. Not the whole time but when the song needs a climax.
