Brief History of Death Metal?

I'm pretty sure there's alot of Metal Gurus in this site and was wondering if you guys could just give me a brief history of death metal? Doesn't have to be very in-depth really, just something so I can start learning about it. Also like.. a couple of it's subgenres, and what it is that characterizes them, and maybe some bands for it?

Yeah that Wiki article is decent...once you learn some shit from that, come here and lurk for a bit or something, then start posting...you should learn fairly quickly.

On that I could change it to say "death metal came from Barney and the teletubbies"
