can someone please enlighten me

perhaps they take personal orders around the office: "Hey, who wants this cd that's soliciting a review?" 3 takers answer.

seriously, did you 'label' it as multiple genres in your request? because CMJ has all their top 10 lists split into specific genres like Loud Rock (which covers metal and punk) and Jazz and Classical, and they may require copies for each potential class of music into which they will lump you- one for each person who heads each genre's reviewers.

that's just to get a review in their mag, right? i recall making a top 10 metal list to send CMJ every week while doing the radio show, and several labels PUSH YOU LIKE HELL over the phone to get their stuff higher on your top 10- like they try and make you feel like you owe them something for them giving you cd's to play.

they do it because if it's good everyone's going to be asking for a promo copy and they're all like punked out and don't want to pay for it.

One goes the archives, one is listened to by the editor/the-guy-who-decides-who-reviews-it and finally the third copy goes tot he reviewer. The second copy is then passed around the office so that all the interested can burn a copy :)

You should have send me one instead I would have more than happy to review it :) Although I can't promise as much exposure....

You'll get your review anyway as soon as the Tzadik shipment gets through...

Did you send a copy to Pitchfork? I see a good review coming out of there...

That one annoying Pitchfork guy will be like "Kayo Dot Derrida po-mo Barthes" and I'll be like "Shut up annoying Pitchfork guy" and then close the internet window and forget to buy the album at Rasputin's or Amoeba :(

There is a couple of annoying writers at Pitchfork but there is also quite a few that are good. The main beef I have with them is that sometimes they have very entertaining writing but they don't talk about the record at all, instead they talk about the context around an album and so forth. But I don't see that happenning with the Kayo Dot album because they won't have any context to talk about, I am sure nobody there as ever heard of motW...

good question.

i wonder if epitonic.com might be a good place. you'd have to give them an .mp3 to put up for download, though, and that's 20% of the album right there (and exactly which song is representative?)

but they would do a good writeup, i'm sure.
