I don't really have any way of playing on any of the ENGL's where I live so I am having a hard time picking one out. I really never use the clean channel on amps so I don't think I need the Powerball/Savage. Someone told me the Blackmore's lead channel is the same as the Savage's, is that true? Also is the Fireball's lead channel the same as the Powerball's?
Can't decide which ENGL head to get...

Would you say that they're pretty much the same, Lasse? Cuz if your certain that I can get that Savage distorted "scrape" (the best word I can think of to describe the distortion, I mean it as a complement) out of a Blackmore (in other words, if the Blackmore really is a Savage with less features), then FUCK do I want one

I just ordered an ENGL e530 preamp. I will post clips with it plus impulses when it arrives, it sounds really cool from what I've heard though. Eventually I may get one of their poweramps to pair it up with.

I tested all of them and they sound all different: the fireball has a lot of distortion going over 12 o clock would be to much gain
the powerball has got more compression than the fireball and is more muddy overall. the blackmore has got less gain but all is tweakable. sure you can compensate that with a screamer. the savage has got a wider range and is not so muddy as the powerball. in terms of distortion I would say it's between the powerball and the blackmore. the preamp can manage tones between the blackmore and the powerball but isn't as punchy in the low ends like the fireball. that is all IMHO of course!!!!

I say get the Savage, my former bandmate has one and it's the thickest tightest amp I have played. But a good cabinet is more important though, so make sure it's a good one.

They are Marshall V30s though, they are not quite the same as the Celestion V30s you'd buy at a store. That's what Metaltastic is getting at...

I just know I've read here that they're different, and you'll notice that on every listing for a 1960AV/BV cab, whether it's on Marshall's website, musician's friend, etc., they always refer to them as having "Marshall Vintage" or "Celestion Vintage" speakers. I really doubt there's much of a difference, and I know a lot of guys here get great results with AV/BV cabs, so it should be fine for now! (though a Mesa/Engl/Bogner/Diezel would undeniably be an upgrade 
)

As I've stated before, there are three different voicings of V30s:
Standard: 60W
Mesa: 70W, slightly brighter
Marshall: 70W, slightly darker.
The difference in the construction of the cab has way more to do with the difference in tone between the cabinets, though, than the V30 voicing.

Geez, how much gain does Savage have then?!
Cause Blackmore's 4th channel (or mode, if it suits you better) has really plenty of gain, to the point I couldn't imagine anyone using it maxed for rhythms.
My Kramer has SD JB at bridge position and the gain is ridiculously high when at max, so much that the amp begins to whistle a bit when you accidentally lift the picking hand off the strings for a tiny bit...
3rd channel suits me fine for rhythm playing, I imagine someone using EMGs would draw even more gain out of it. What's great about it is that the 3rd channel is dead silent, whereas 4th induces a bit of hiss due to the higher gain levels.
Damn it you sissies, (ab)use that picking hand and lower the gain!

Fuck I want a Blackmore so bad. I wish they popped up used more often because I can't really justify picking up a brand new one until June or so...
