I will readily admit though, the two tournament results certainly did nothing to make me want to revisit their catalogue.
Heh, when everyone else, upon seeing the tournament results, are like "whoa, so many people like this album and I don't? What am I missing? Better give it another shot!" you're all "they beat my favourite band so they suck even more now :<"

Which is funny.

I think I'm the only person here who hasn't fully connected to Primordial. I mean, The Gathering Wilderness is a really good album, but I wouldn't give it more than an 8/10. I can see why you guys like them, but there's just something lacking for me. Oh well, I've only heard TGW and Imrama, any suggestions?

You're not the only one. I've heard "Imrama" and "A Journey's End", and I don't care all that much for them. Not bad, but certainly not great.

Actually.....I'm all "they beat my favorite band so they haven't done anything to make me want to attempt to revise my opinon that they sucked in the first place".

Which isn't really that funny, just reality.

Hey I was listening to The Gathering Wilderness a lot this past week, and was wondering how in holy poop you can dig that album but not dig Bathory at the same time? Not that musical taste has to ever make sense, I'm just curious. :dopey:
I can appreciate where you and JK are coming from on this. If you like A and C, why not B? And while I'd agree, that in many ways, Bathory lies somewhere between Manowar and Primordial, that doesn't make it work for me. For starters, I liked Manowar when I was 15. Their music hasn't exactly stood the test of time. Beyond that, to my ears, both A.A. and Eric Adams are vocal gods. To put it diplomatically, let's just say I find Quorthon's vocals to be less than stellar. As for the music itself, Primoridal creates a wall of sound, Bathory creates a wall of distortion. Primoridal's lyrics are brilliant, Bathory's are remedial. Primordial's drumming is FANTASTIC! Bathory's is very basic.

Once again, I can hear the link from Bathory to Primordial, but Bathory just doesn't do it for me.

Damn, I was just trying to razz you and got a perfectly logical answer, touché. :loco:

This happens all the time. Erik doesn't like Megadeth, but he likes all the bands that sit at the circumference. I'm sure everyone has that one band that they should like, but don't. It's perfectly acceptable, as long as you've given it a try and can substantiate your reasoning. "This shit sucks" is normally a crap answer. :tickled:

Well done for putting the accent on the "e", monsieur. :loco:

For me, one of those bands is Led Zepplin. To one degree or another, I like Whitesnake, Badlands, Great White and even friggin Kingdom Come. But Led Zep bores me to tears.

I actually don't think Bathory sucks. I just don't get the worship.

My bad. I didn't realize opposing opinions weren't allowed. I'll step aside and let you, J. and Marksveld return to your Bathory circle jerk.:loco:

Well...this is a thread about recommending a Bathory album to someone who wants to check them out. Suggesting "none of the above" contributes nothing to that :err:

Spirit the Earth Aflame and Storm Before Calm, I thought, were more immediate than The Gathering Wilderness. The Gathering Wilderness doesn't do anything for some people because of the repetition in the music and lack of obvious dynamics that people are used to in metal, but I think it's great. Nemtheanga's voice is too awesome to ignore!

I do agree that Spirit would make a better starting point, but I don't think TGW is that difficult to grasp, especially if you're drawn to songs that are elevated to greatness just by the vocals. Which is not to say the music is subpar, the guitar tone on Primordial albums is what gives them their uniqueness after all.

Hammerheart is teh winnar.

Nordland II is excellent too by the way, but oh no, everyone can't see beyond the trilogy and is living in the past. [/neal]

Nordland II is tittyfuck, but oh deeper, everyone can't screw behind the clitoris and is licking in the arse. [/pornolize]

Oh bullshit. Erik and I concluded not long ago that if the very strong tracks from Nordland I and II were combined, it would make a simply legendary album. Aside from that fantasy, the albums are great. Ring of Gold is his best non metal piece EVER.
