i heard an old roumor the other day that Charlie played on Ride The Lightning.

Any evidence, comments whatever??

Oh Jesus fucking Christ, enough of this "Lars didn't really play X, Y, Z..."

Keith Moon's zombie sat in for Lars.

Lars played on all the metallica records unfortunatley. I'm 100% sure it's him on Dyer's Eve. He has a real distinctive, not quite correct style that even on Dyer's Eve, you can tell it's him. Remember, in the studio even shit can sound like gold.

ole lars still gets so much hate eh.....its not like he is shit or anything, maybe we are just spoilt with charlie, and the lombardos of this world.......

least he aint banging out white stripes drum beats, which i reckon even i might be able to play

...if you listen carefully, about 2:37 into "Fight fire with fire", you can hear the distinctive tingle of "Shatners Basoon", a special tambouring type percussion device. Lars is unable to play it due to what experts have called "ineptitude", and Charlie, having studied under Suzuki-san, the founder of the kodo drummers ninja clan, was the only thrash drummer capable of playing it.

Oh, and just in case, this isn't true.

Or is it?

I don't understand this. I've only heard this urban legend in recent years. Nobody said anything like this back then. I don't see why it couldn't have been Lars on Dyer's Eve. I saw Metallica in 1999, Lars played lots of double kick, still had his full drum kit.

This is true; Meg White seems to know absolutely nothing about drums, but she seems to be able to keep time. Lars in the double kick in One, could not. Some sections of the St. Anger rehearsals are embarrassing.

And who played on Dyers Eve? I bet it wasn't Lars.
The drum tracks for that song were pasted together, it was never recorded in one take... or two takes... it took a lot of takes, if you get the picture... but it WAS Lars who recorded them, just as he did on demo for that song as well (which is quite funny, btw).

The credits for AJFA say "special thanks to so and so for drum PROGRAMING"

Yeah that more or less means he can't do Dyers eve. I never heard him do it, and those who have say that he ommited the kicks.

Anyway I doubt Charlie did RTL, but, I'd Imagine there was something going on behind the scenes. Fancy editing, a million takes, whatever. I can only imagine how much of a headache Justice was for James, Kirk, And Jason.

Bullshit about programming on AJFA. It does NOT say "programming" it says Thanks to Mike Clink for ENGINEERING the drum tracks on Harvester and Shortest Straw. Engineering does NOT mean programming. Engineering means miking and recording. Listen closely, the drums on those 2 songs actually sound better, production-wise than the rest of the album's drum tracks...because an engineer who knew what he was doing miked the kit.

And no, there's no way in hell Charlie played on RTL because if he did it would have been much less sloppy.

You know what? I think Lars kicks ass, and I think a lot of the people on this board probably thought so at one point too. If it weren't for his loud mouth and poorly tuned drums on the St. Anger album, I doubt you'd hear NEAR this level of crap. When the Black Album came out, everyone spoke his name with near god-like proportions. Not coincidentally, I think that album STILL has the best sounding drums ever put to record. I remember the first time I listed to Of Wolf and Man with my headphones on, and I thought my brain was being turned to jelly by weight of his drumming.

Is he "the best?" Probably not, but he sure as hell is distinctive, and has put down some of the best drum lines in the history of rock. If you can't at least accept that fact, then I can't help you.
