Charlie riding the lightning

ole lars still gets so much hate eh.....its not like he is shit or anything, maybe we are just spoilt with charlie, and the lombardos of this world.......

least he aint banging out white stripes drum beats, which i reckon even i might be able to play

I'll agree that Lars is a good drummer BUT Metallicas production is so shifty from one album to the next. I love Justice because the songs are great but the bass and drums do sound like shit.

Do you ever have enything to say that doesn't condense to "Fuck this, I'm so cool and forums are gay?"
Apparently not. But, "Lars sucks, the black album sucks, Load sucks" is a cliche. Whatever; that's just my opinion, I'll try to keep the thread crapping to a minimum. Continue.

Thankyou for your gracious permission to continue.

I was just trying to make the point that Lars isn't the greatest drummer in the world, nor is his performance on the Black album anything particularly special. Well produced, yes, but well played? Competently is more appropriate.

"Lars sucks, the black album sucks, Load sucks" may be a cliche, but it happens to mirror my opinion. You may be bored of hearing opinions that mirror that - perhaps they annoy you by being contrary to your own. I'm certainly not espousing them to be part of some internet "in crowd" - I think I'm a little over the hill to be part of any "crowd".

I think that Lars performance on "kill 'em all" is his best, mostly because it is raw, shambolic and in the very real spirit of a band who cared more about the feeling than the execution.

I'm curious other than Lars and Charlie just which drum performances you do like (in a desperate effort to take the thread into more positive territory)

It's cool man, I get your point. Definitely Charlie blows the runt away! Especially now, it's sickening. I don't think the black album is that bad, but whatever. Compare that to his drumming now, and it sounds amazing.

Yeah, we can agree about that. I've been listening to "nobody knows anything" a lot recently, and the drumming on that (especially on MOMD) really kills!

I'm a big fan of Ken Owen (Carcass) not necessarily for the technique, but again, for the feeling. I'm also really a big fan of Doc (Vader, RIP) and Bill Wards stuff - great abuse of a simple kit. Junkie John (Gorerotted) is also pretty entertaining to drum...

My fave drumming of all time is on the intro to "No Love Lost (Live)" from "Wake up and smell the carcass", it's actually the intro from one of their earlier songs segued into it!

And yeah man, it's cool...have a beer from me if I was being a dick - it happens (all too often,in my case)!

Ok so how many theories are there now about Lars's Drums?

Someone said it was Charlie.

Someone said it was the Magic Bullet

Someone said it was Triggers that were playing samples

Someone said it was copied / pasted / then looped

And then there are still the people who think he did it himself

WTF guys we can't all be right! I think RTL was probably Lars. Maybe some help from splicing tape together, maybe not, but it was Lars I think. If any album should be in question I think it's Justice, for it has far more emotion on the drums then Lars has ever done before or after that record.

I heard an interveiw where both james and lars said they'd record for the intro to the 1st chorus, then punch in and do the 1st chorus up to the 2nd, and so on an so forth. no wonder they took decades to make albums

No, no, it was all me, I'll own up to it! :)
You're right about Ward! I've heard a cover of Paranoid, maybe, I can't remember exactly, and it made me realise how important Ward is--the cover's drums were so weak!

Charlie's drumming on Nobody Knows is fucking...I don't know what. I've heard somebody say it just wasn't necessary, but so what? The thing is, it isn't overtly pyrotechnical, like Peart can be; I think the rhythm is so unusual. Sure, it isn't necessary for a rock/metal song, but the hell with it; I figure, if you can play something like that, show the world.

The more props Benante gets, the better; everybody talks about Lombardo, for example, from that generation. Charlie is highly underappreciated, it seems to me.

It's amazing how Lars just let his drumming lapse. It's not from lack of playing, as they've been recording and touring, so it must just disinterest, which is worse than lack of ability; I figure you can make up for that with passion.

And speaking of Benante/The Danish cunt, Anthrax' cover of Phantom Lord...need I say more? :worship:

Well, I've seen them live twice, and those songs, like One, USED to be played great, including the double bass. The recent Stones show, Lars played One just fine, until.....Christ, it was a like a 12-year-old beginner.

I got the impression he worked hard on Justice; I read years ago that he went to his old drum teacher.

I've also read that on the Black Album, Lars used kick pedals with metal heads. Might explain something.

Personally I think Lars' playing on Load and Reload is better than the heavier shit before those albums. He's shitty for a thrash metal drummer, but for a regular hard rock band I think he can be really solid when he tries. But he hasn't really been trying in years.

I take lessons from a legendary drummer here in Boston, and he told me his buddy was the engineer for the BLACK album and it took Lars 3 MONTHS to track the drums for this record, Lars can't be practicing on his off time, theres no fucking way...Ive seen Metallica 12 times and not once could he play ONE like he does on the record, in fact, his double bass (if you want to call it that) is all over the place, way sloppy....
