hey simon, yeah i had been emailing with Blue Skies Turn Black but they haven't responded after that first time. We asked White Mice about their show on the 1st and they said they'd look into it but we haven't heard from them again either. Do you think you could ask the Mandatory Moustache dudes about what we can do?

Also we have an Ottawa show already lined up at a record store - but we can't do it if we don't get a Montreal show.

Toronto - not sure if we're doing that this time - maybe Mia knows?

Victoria - instead of Olympia maybe? Don't want to snub Avi or anything though.

I have just been informed that White Mice cancelled... reason enough for them not to give you any news....

woah, that's weird! they were at least playing that show as of 11:30 AM this morning. they sent me an e-mail then telling me that they had contacted the booking agent for the montreal show to see if we could get on the bill, but that they weren't confident about him getting around it to it since he's on vacation/tour right now. they e-mailed me two hours ago too and made no mention of a cancellation... i wonder what's up?

That's what I have been told from unconfirmed sources... I have not heard anything from the booker yet, which are the mustachioed people btw...

I'll talk to some people and get back to you...

I have reserved a space anyway for you guys on the 3rd, the only available place at Green Room, just in case it doesn't pan out. I am in contact with the booker at Main Hall if anything is dropped from that weekend.

The White Mice show already has 4 bands on the bill, I doubt you will get in.

BTW, description of the Green Room:

The Green Room is a chill, unpretentious club space, part live venue; part public house.
Arty, loft-style hall space.
Full sound system, stage, lighting and curtains to your specifications.
Full bar, washrooms. On the second floor.
Cool, chill, unpretentious club space, 20' x 70', exposed brick wall, hardwood floors, 12ft ceilings, Full sound system, stage, lighting and curtains to your specifications.
Full bar, washrooms. On the ground floor.
Capacity: 120

how expensive would it be for 3 axels? or a van which might be considered 9 tons or something.

It depends when and where you're coming from (I'm not 100% sure of the details either, you might want to try www.bcferries.com)... I don't think it's enough that the cost of taking the ferry should put you off of coming here though. The ferry ride itself is pleasant enough, just make sure you know where there's a ferry terminal that can get you here from where you're coming from, they tend to be a little out of the way.

hey simon, thanks! OK we're going to switch our ottawa date from the 3rd to the 2nd then, and plan on montreal for the 3rd. i haven't heard anything back about the 1st so maybe we should just go with it this way.

Homeland Security: Why the Grey is Banned in the US

On February 12, 2005, the four members of The Grey, were headed from their home base of Ottawa, Ont., to a show in Ogdensburg. N.Y. They never got there. Hayden Menzies tells Econo what happened.

We were going to Ogdensburg New York to play one, potentially non-paying show.

When we got to the border, we, regrettably, lied at first about whether or not we were playing because we were uncertain whether or not we needed visas for a potentially non-paying show. After looking on the internet and searching our van, [the American border guards] saw that we were supposed to play and hauled us in for interviews one by one for the next 6 hours. We were fingerprinted, photographed and expedited as illegal aliens from the United States.

The supervising officer did all the talking, while the officer in training did not say much at all, but his signature was on all the paperwork.

The main question we were asked was if this is how we made our living. Funny since one of the reasons they suspected something was fishy, was when they found a book in the van with merch sales (an oversight on our part). The book had pretty sad looking numbers, like making $20 total from a show. They couldn't understand that we did this for fun.

We were treated as terrorists at first. When we first went, one by one, into the room with the interrogating officer they used that line about "America is at war, and Canada may not take that seriously..." and "since 9-11, we take these things seriously." Then they realized that we were not making any money doing what we do, and that we were more naïve than anything else. Some of the other guards even told us that the whole thing was bullshit, and that it was overzealous and a waste of paperwork.

The decision to deport and ban us from the US was made entirely by officer Kurt Tennat, the supervising officer. He said he had consulted his supervisor by phone, but we don't know for sure. No court proceedings, no legalities, no chance.

The experience soured us on border issues, but as far as America as a whole, our opinions are pretty much the same. The border happenings sort of exemplified our feelings regarding the U.S. and its political endeavors--confused and misguided, but hopeful that, despite the many problems, there are a lot of good people who, if given the right information and the chance, could change how things are run.

There has been some letter writing from Brian Lowit [the head of our label. Lovitt] and ourselves. We’ve written to our members of parliament here in Canada, to U.S. senators, and American Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. So far, there hasn’t been too much in the way of positive response, but we're still trying. There is an appeal process but it is a long shot and it’s not cheap.

As of filing, Menzies and his bandmates are still banned from entering the United States for the next five years.
