Chicago Peeps - Orphaned Land

Simon since we are now Facebook buddies. I will look for you. You kind of look like the singer for Sonata Arctica with shorter hair. I will be with Jason so we will keep an eye out. We will be in the restuarant before the show. Look for us there.

Yep, I will be sporting my Into Night's Requiem Infernal shirt (Yea, big shock, I know)

Yay! We get Britt - Bob, I have his # so we can text him when we get there.

Huh? That's a new one. Will try to find you guys at the restaurant.

The interesting thing about the Katatonia-Moonspell tour a few years back is that in every show I attended (I was actually at 4 different stops on that tour), the venue got considerably emptier after Katatonia. Perhaps the only exception was New York, although you could definitely tell the difference.

Moonspell has done more US tours than Katatonia and had established a fanbase prior to that.

Wasn't that considered a co-headlining tour?

All I remember about that tour is that when it came through Chicago, there was a preview in the Trib that raved about how awesome Katatonia is and didn't even mention Moonspell.

Great turnout for the show. Seems like lots came out for Novembers Doom. Very smart move having them added to this bill. The first band was one of the worst things to stand through. Cant remember who they were....basically almost all instrumental. ND came on next. There was something missing this time around. Still good but not as good as last time. Sorry Vito. Swallow the Sun was boring. This is the stuff I hate standing around waiting through. Orphan Land were really good live but not something I would ever race to go buy on disc. I left before Katatonia. I am not a fan and I have Raven the next night so I dont want to be at 2 shows in a row late.

It was nice seeing everyone again. Britt (Invisable Guest), Jason, Jose, and I finally got to me Simon (nomanisimon). Amber ( Metal Spice ), we saw you but didnt get a chance to say "hey". I guess I will see you at Blind Guardian.

sorry to all that stood near me. I had a great burger at the restuarant next door and was farting like a mad man. I think I spyhuntered Simon by accident (when you fart and walk in front of someone like the old 80's video game). Britt was the only one who bought it up.

Yep, really great time last night.
I like REGGIES more and more everytime I go.

ND were good as usual. We need some new material though!!!! :)

I was very disappointed by Swallow The Sun. I had one disc of theirs years ago, which I thought was ok.
For as long as they have been around, I expected a lot more.

Orphaned Land were great. I was curious how they would come off live.
TONS and TONS of energy. Only complaint is that they didn't play my fav OL tune in HALO DIES.

Katatonia were decent. Took a bit for me to get into their set, as they must have played a lot off their latest one which I don't have.
Highlight for me was that they pulled out SAW YOU DROWN.

Cool to see Britt again, and hear some very interesting stories of his travels.
Good to meet Simon as well.

Major suckage we missed the show, my wife didnt get home from our dog training class until 9 by the time we were out the door I called the venue and they said OL was playing. So we didnt make it. Super bummed about missing the show, some great bands at the best music venue in the Chicagoland area.

As others have said it was a really good turnout. It also was good to finally meet Jason, Bob and Britt.

First band for me honestly wasn't agonizing to listen to but they weren't great. As Bob said they pretty much are an instrumental band. I think I still have memories of those Pearl Room bands, so that may very well be why I didn't mind them as much as some.

Novembers Doom I liked. I probably will end up getting their discs at some point. Wasn't blown away though, but as Bob said they didn't play as well as they have before, so that might be part of it.

Swallow the Sun I was disappointed with. I saw them on the Soilwork/Darkane tour a couple of years ago and that actually turned me onto them. I have most of their discs as I like their sound, but I did not like their performance.

Orphaned Land was great as usual. They totally injected the audience with a boost of energy after Swallow the Sun. In my opinion they stole the show. It was weird though seeing them in such a smaller place and you could tell they wanted to move around more, but there just was no room on that stage for it.

Katatonia I liked a lot. I'm not saying they're the best live band, but what they do, they do well. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that fake thick black mustache the guitarist had on the first number of songs. Weird. But yeah. Oh and Jason, you should definitely pick up their new disc. It's probably in their top three in my opinion, if not their best.

My only complaint about the show is that the doors opened much later than advertised, which freaked me out due to me going via the train. I was happy that the set change was quick, but at the end of the day I had to cut out a tad bit early since the last time I went to Reggies (Dianno) it took me forever to get a cab, so I cut out right before the encore. It was pretty funny actually because Britt cut out right before the final song of the regular set, then Jason cut out halfway through the final song and then I cut out after it.

I'm still not the biggest fan of this place, but it is growing on me. It just feels more congested than it needs to be in my opinion.

Anyone have the setlist for OL from last night? Wanted to go, but with getting back from PP and Iced Earth on Tuesday, needed some time to catch up on work and family. Perhaps see some of you on Tues at the HoB for Iced Earth.

seeing them tonight in St.Paul just after Yom Kippur (I'm jewish just like they are).

Mazel Tov!!! Me too!!!

Simon - Do you know if Katatonia did an encore?

Agreed Orphaned Land were amazing. The most energetic of the night.

Yeah, ND played just fine, but something seemed missing. Just didn't have the energy they usually do.

As I mentioned to you elsewhere, yeah they did. The encore was just two songs though if it rang true to the other shows on the tour. I also know the workers there were mentioning they still had the encore to do, plus the abruptly left the stage and it was still dark by the time I was out the door.

I love the venue, I guess I'm biased because I've played there and every member of the staff is completely professional, and they treat the bands really well. They have good sound, the house sound guys are good, they provide stage hands to help the bands that's why you see these quick times between bands.

The venue has great food, awesome beer selection, I like the other room because if there is a band you dont want to see you can hit the other room or sit outside.

Not to make excuses but honestly, we had ZERO stage space due to the headliner's giant pedal boards and all the backline behind us, so it was tough getting into it physically as much as I normally would up there. Plus Paul had a really rough night physically with his back fucking him up, which is a real drag. I know for the audience none of that shit matters, they just want their money's worth so excuses are pointless, but just wanted to let you know we tried our best! We were grateful for the positive reception we received, regardless, so thanks guys.

Larry - I have seen you guys what, probably almost 10 times now over the past 5 years or so.
I am always very honest when it comes to anything ND related.

You guys played very well. Yeah, I could see how cramped space could add to what I am talking about.
Just some energy normally felt from your guys set seemed missing. That's all.

Most importantly, you guys went over well, and no doubt made some new fans.

No worries. You know we'll always be there!

Great show on Friday!
I seemed to have missed everyone except for a brief 'Hello' to Vito and Larry.
Sorry I missed Bob and Jason, although with Bob's swamp ass, I guess it may have been a good thing.
Ha!
My only complaint is the show needed to be booked at a bigger venue as it was WAY too crowded in there. And I like that venue. The sound is good and the employees aren't dicks like they are at a lot of venues where big names play.
