Well I'm hooked on the new Children Of Bodom......Hate Crew Deathroll.....it has everything that I love in it, melody, killer leads, great drumming, changes, fast parts, galloping guitars, great structure, lots of hooks, solid vocals, even some keyboards that I can live with(usually not, but if done right, like this then OK),
And I just saw them last Friday night & they impressed enough to buy their album, it Rocks!..........It's my Deadlyembrace pick of the month.......highly recommended!........So if you like Older In Flames, or the last couple Callenish Cirlcle's, then its right up your alley........It's Ruling my CD Player right now!

I bought the import HCD CD about 6 months ago, under the recommendation of the indie metal store dude -- he always nails new releases for me. This CD is awesome, my favorite song -- Angels Don't Kill. Slow, clean, heavy riffing, and yea, the keyboards aren't overdone.

I hear, though, that this CD is different (that is, better) than all other COB releases. Opinions?

Well...I only have Hatecrew and Hatebreeder and I think Hatecrew is WAY better. The keyboards on Hatebreeder overtake the music...and I just don't like that..I want to hear the guitar..

hell ya, bodom most definitly slay, and hatecrew is a very well done excelent release by the finish veterans, i do recomend hatebreeder and follow the reaper, both excelent releases, with follow having more keyboard, but again excelent production

I just downloaded a couple of their songs from a friend of mine, I'd never heard them before. Holy Crap! Im DEFINATLY going to have to go pick up an album or two of theirs. I still flinch a little bit at the keyboards (I would prefer most of my metal w/o a keyboard.) but they are certainly managable. There are some killer leads in there, more than enough to please the guitarists out there! They are probably my new favorite Black/Death metal band.

Omg, I don't know whether to be pleased or exasperated... I just happened to drop by this board (I'm not on the boards much anymore) and saw this... it's great that all your musical interests are broadening, but still... I always hate it when ppl say stuff like "keyboards are getting in the way of guitar", but I guess that's just opinion.

Personally, I think all their cds are great, they just have different moods... although they all have an aggressiveness throughout. They started out gloomy, chaotic and even atmospheric sometimes, and now they sound like Pantera or Annihilator in some songs. I'd probably have to recommed Hate Crew Deathroll to you guys tho... but check out songs like Black Widow too, good thrashy song (for the first part anyhow).

Sorry to be a bit of dick in advance here, but I can't let these two slide without comment... "my fav black/death band"... seems like yet another case of vocals defining someone's musical outlook. CoB's first album was close to black metal, but this one is more like thrash or something... it's definitely not like death or black metal (the two most musically impotent metal genres besides maybe nu-metal).

"most immature album lyrically". Let me guess, you looked on Darklyrics or something. PLEASE GO TO MY SITE IF YOU WANT THE ACTUAL LYRICS (or at least closer than the fucking bullshit gibberish that's on Darklyrics). Some songs like Sixpounder are very difficult to transcribe, but others like Angels Don't Kill were quite easy... and the lyrics are fine for this type of band! What he says isn't as important as how he says it anyway, but I like to know... if you do too, go to my site, you will probably be pleased.

Nice to have your comments, you are the resident COB expert, thanks for stopp'n bye!

Guys, the lyrics aren't meant to be taken too seriously... I mean, "Bodom Beach Terror", "Triple Corpse Hammerblow", it's mostly just funny shit.

What's wrong with lines like "picked me up from the gutter with a gentle kiss, then ripped up my heart to show me how black it is" from Angels Don't Kill, anyway? Oh well.

Who cares about..lyrics..and titles of the songs..as long as the music is awesome

You can call the genre whatever you like. It still, as DE has put it, is RULING my cd player right now.

I care about the lyrics. In addition to the music. However, it's still important to me.

If the writer of the lyrics doesn't care, should you still care? He has said countless times not to take them seriously... you think Chuck Billy wants everyone to take all of his lyrics seriously (well I hope not)?

If you care, then go on my site and get the lyrics for the songs not printed. You say you have the album, so you must know that only four songs' lyrics are printed (as they always do). I transcribed the other lyrics for all the folks like you who care about the lyrics. And I hate to be conceited, but it's true: I did a much better job then everyone else who's posted them on the 'net (that I've seen). Some of the lines that ppl think they say are just ludicrous (ex: I think it's "the breaking point's getting nearer", from Sixpounder, one of the -easier- lines to hear. On Darklyrics it says "the wrecking voice stain mirror". Uh, which makes more sense?).

Call it melodic death metal if you will, I just call it metal. Nothing more, nothing less. I certainly don't hear any death metal in it tho... death metal rarely has any flow or coherancy in the music... death metal is Dying Fetus. This ain't Dying Fetus. If you wanna play the genre game, call it progressive melodic thrash power metal or something... :Spin: Alexi (the guitarist/vocalist) calls it "punk rock from hell". :D That's how I'd describe his vocals, at least.

Okay now, that's just ridiculous. Death metal has no flow or coherency? You, my friend, need to listen to some real death metal - Dismember, Amon Amarth, Carcass, early Entombed, and of course Death. Dying Fetus is pretty much hardcore, maybe grindcore/death, and to say that they are representative of the death metal genre is waaaay inaccurate.

Nice job with the CoB lyrics, by the way.

By saying they sound like old In Flames, and DT, you've already gotten into the same stupid genre argument that's been done a billion times or more on the CoB board. You've now reduced your opinion, in my eyes, to nothing, because they don't even remotely sound like either of those bands, style-wise, riff-wise, structure-wise, nothing... I don't wanna get into a big genre discussion and all that, but I'll say this much: Alexi's influences do not include In Flames and DT (at least anymore). He respects those bands, but he did not set out to be like them with Children of Bodom. Back in the day, when they were called Inearthed, they tried to make melodic death. Now they just make a good ol mix of 80's and 90's metal with keyboards.

Saying I don't understand the meaning of melodic is plain stupid... however you could say I don't understand the meaning of death metal, because every death band I've ever heard fucking sucked ass, with the exception of Death (and they are very progressive as you all know). Like I said, if you wanna play the genre game, call them what they are, and nothing else... because thrash, power and prog don't add up to "death metal", last time I checked. And just because he sings with a high-pitched growl, doesn't mean it's black (or death) metal either. All I hear when I hear his voice on the new albums (Ftr and HCD) is punk... I can't deny that he sounded like a black metal vocalist on the first two, since he didn't really know how to sing back then. Oh, and last time I checked, genres are -never- defined by their lyrical content. At least not among the people I (want to) know.

@Pyrus: I don't care for death metal, it's too limited... I suppose there is some decent bands out there, but I really don't care to check them out right now. Maybe another time...... oh, and about Dying Fetus. To me, they're death metal, and to everyone elese around here as well. I don't think anyone would be caught dead using words like "grindcore" where I live... I hate them anyway, it's not even music in my opinion.

I bought this release about a week ago and I really enjoy it. Nothing new I would say, but still enjoy it a lot. It's a great album to put on your car stereo while you're driving, it really pumps you up.

For those of us who think we know everything about COB, here's what Alexi has to say about which category they fit into.....

"For me it's impossible to categorize our music, to put a label on it. There are just tons of elements from different styles of metal. There is this speed/thrash thing going on and also the black/death metal thing. There's a lot of punk rock and hardcore in it too. All of those put together." -Alexi Laiho (Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles #75, Dec 2003).

Hmmm...Death AND Black in there...Guess Alexi hears what everyone else does on this board...excluding a small percentage anyway:Smug:

Oh and Stun....don't patronize us by telling us you are pleased to see us expanding our musical horizons...it appears to me that we listen to more genres than you do, "I don't care to listen to any Death metal" anyway...I thought you'd like to see what Alexi thinks...cheers!

personally, I find CoB to be another one of those bands that I cannot understand while people are all gaga over them (much like Nevermore and Opeth). I appreciate that they're technically proficient and all that, but the keyboards are overwhelming. but that's just my opinion......

nice pic of the kiddies with Wally by the way......

Hmm I didnt know people cared about lyrics in metal that much. I personally like the goofy lyrics, kinda gets away from people thinking metal is always so serious, its about having fun. I was actually able to see CoB in St. Louis on saturday night, fucking loved it!! All of their cd's have a different sound. Who knows what their sound is, who really cares, its just kickass metal!!!
